CM asks officials to draw on Kakatiya architecture for airport designs and ensure coordinated infrastructure planning; Owaisi seeks Mamnoor airport naming after freedom fighter
Hyderabad, September 2026 : Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed officials to ensure that the proposed airports at Warangal and Adilabad, along with the Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi, reflect the state’s rich cultural, architectural and artistic heritage.
During a review meeting on Tuesday, the Chief Minister examined the designs and construction plans for the three projects and suggested that officials study the architectural and sculptural features of prominent heritage sites, including the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, Ramappa Temple and Pillalamarri Temple. He said elements inspired by Telangana’s history and traditional architecture should be incorporated into the proposed structures.
The review covered both the aesthetic aspects and the infrastructure requirements associated with the proposed airports. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on several logistical challenges at the sites, including the shifting of electricity lines, diversion of streams and roads, relocation of BSNL lines and shifting of drinking water supply pipelines.
Reddy stressed the need for close coordination among various government departments so that infrastructure-related works do not delay the airport projects. He directed officials from the Energy, Roads and Buildings, Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation departments to coordinate with BSNL authorities and execute their respective works simultaneously wherever possible.
The Chief Minister also instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive plan that takes into account both present requirements and future expansion needs. He called for the development of wider approach roads along the airport compound walls and their connection with nearby district, state and national highways.
The meeting also discussed the diversion of water bodies and streams in areas where airport infrastructure is being developed. Reddy suggested that suitable tanks or water bodies could be created within or near the airport premises wherever necessary to facilitate the diversion and management of water flows.
The proposed Warangal airport at Mamnoor has particular significance for the region, with the state government seeking its development to improve air connectivity in northern Telangana. The Telangana government has already completed the required land acquisition for the Mamnoor airport and handed over the land to the Airports Authority of India. The state has also sought facilities such as passenger and cargo terminals and maintenance, repair and overhaul infrastructure.
The cultural focus of the airport project also comes amid discussions over its proposed name. AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has written to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy requesting that the Mamnoor airport be named after freedom fighter Moulvi Syed Alauddin.
In his letter, Owaisi said Alauddin, a native of the erstwhile Warangal district, was associated with Hyderabad’s resistance to British rule during the 1857 uprising. He said Alauddin and Turrebaz Khan led a resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857, following which Alauddin was captured and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail.
Owaisi said naming the airport after Alauddin would honour his contribution to the freedom struggle and help preserve the legacy of what he described as a largely unsung freedom fighter for future generations.
His proposal followed the state government’s invitation for suggestions on an appropriate name for the proposed Mamnoor airport. The naming issue is therefore now part of the broader discussion surrounding the airport’s development and regional identity.
The review meeting brought together senior officials and elected representatives, with the Chief Minister emphasising that the airport projects and Telangana Bhavan should combine modern infrastructure with the state’s distinctive architectural identity.
The government’s approach seeks to ensure that the new public buildings not only meet operational and connectivity requirements but also showcase Telangana’s historical legacy through their design, architecture and surrounding infrastructure.
