Kyiv, Sep 2026 : Russian air attacks killed at least 12 people and injured dozens more in Kyiv and surrounding areas early Monday, Ukrainian authorities said, as Moscow’s strikes on the Ukrainian capital entered their sixth consecutive day.
Large waves of drones have targeted Kyiv and nearby regions over the past five days, killing civilians and damaging residential buildings, warehouses and other infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said some of the drones were newer models equipped with jet engines, making them more difficult for air-defence systems to intercept.
The near-continuous attacks have disrupted daily life across the capital, with millions of residents facing prolonged air-raid alerts and repeated warnings to seek shelter.
More explosions were heard in Kyiv on Monday morning, according to a Reuters witness. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia had used drones and ballistic missiles in overnight attacks, targeting residential neighbourhoods as well as railway infrastructure.
Ukraine’s air force said it had intercepted five ballistic missiles during the attacks. Kyiv has recently received a limited number of additional Patriot interceptor missiles, strengthening its ability to defend against Russian ballistic weapons, although Ukrainian officials continue to call for greater air-defence support from Western allies.
The Russian strikes also reportedly targeted a border crossing with NATO member Romania in Ukraine’s Odesa region, highlighting the wider geographical reach of Moscow’s aerial campaign.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified its own attacks on Russian territory as part of efforts to disrupt Moscow’s war logistics and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian strikes have increasingly focused on oil facilities, refineries and transport networks that support Russia’s military operations.
Regional authorities in Russia reported damage following Ukrainian attacks. A fire broke out in the port area of Ust-Luga, one of Russia’s major export terminals in the northwest, according to the local governor. Civilian infrastructure was also damaged in the Samara region, around 800 km (500 miles) southeast of Moscow and home to several major oil-refining facilities.
In another development, Russia’s acting governor of Belgorod region said a civilian was killed in an attack. Belgorod borders Ukraine and has frequently come under Ukrainian fire during the conflict.
The latest escalation comes as both sides continue to target critical infrastructure and military-linked facilities far from the immediate front lines. While Russia’s sustained aerial campaign has placed Kyiv under increasing pressure, Ukraine’s attacks inside Russia are aimed at weakening Moscow’s energy revenues and logistical capacity.
The intensifying strikes underline the continuing escalation of the conflict, with civilians on both sides facing growing risks as attacks increasingly extend beyond the battlefield.
