Hyderabad, Sep 2026 : Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar on Wednesday suspended all 21 Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators present in the House for the remainder of the Monsoon Session after they repeatedly disrupted proceedings while demanding a discussion on alleged police high-handedness against the party’s women MLAs.
The suspension was announced after Minister for Legislative Affairs D. Sridhar Babu moved a motion seeking action against the protesting legislators. Among those suspended were BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao and the party’s Deputy Leader in the Assembly, T. Harish Rao.
The BRS legislators had been pressing for a debate on the alleged manhandling of their women MLAs by police at the Assembly entrance on Monday. The Opposition party had submitted an adjournment motion seeking discussion on the alleged police action, threats purportedly issued by Congress legislators and what it described as the deteriorating law and order situation in Telangana.
As soon as the House assembled, BRS members demanded that the Speaker take up their adjournment motion. However, Prasad Kumar rejected the demand and suggested that the issue could be raised through another parliamentary mechanism.
Unhappy with the decision, BRS legislators raised slogans of “We want justice” and entered the Well of the House, disrupting the proceedings.
Amid the commotion, Minister Adluri Laxman raised a separate issue concerning alleged purification rituals performed by BRS leaders at a location in Siddipet where Dalits had staged a protest. The protest had reportedly been organised against alleged derogatory and abusive remarks made by BRS MLCs against Speaker Prasad Kumar.
Laxman said the issue deserved discussion as it concerned the self-respect of Telangana and highlighted what he described as continued discrimination against Dalits. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka backed the demand and displayed photographs purportedly showing BRS functionaries participating in the alleged purification rituals.
Vikramarka also criticised the BRS legislators for entering the Well and disrupting the proceedings. Questioning their demand for justice, he said the dignity of the Speaker had allegedly been insulted and accused BRS leaders of attempting to intimidate the presiding officer.
The Speaker, the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister Sridhar Babu repeatedly appealed to the protesting legislators to return to their seats and allow the House to function normally. However, the BRS members continued their protest and refused to withdraw from the Well.
Following the continued disruption, Sridhar Babu moved the motion to suspend the protesting legislators for the remainder of the Monsoon Session. The Speaker subsequently approved the motion, resulting in the suspension of all 21 BRS members present in the House.
The development further escalated tensions between the ruling Congress and the principal Opposition BRS during the ongoing Assembly session.
