Washington, October 2026 : US President Donald Trump has indicated that further military action against Iran remains a possibility, while acknowledging that the conflict could carry political consequences for Republicans ahead of the upcoming US congressional elections.
Speaking to reporters before leaving Washington, Trump said public opinion was divided over his decision to engage in the conflict. However, he defended the military campaign, arguing that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons was necessary despite the potential electoral cost.
“There’s a price to pay, which I knew immediately when I did it, but we can’t let Iran have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
The US President suggested that additional action could follow but did not announce any new military operation, identify potential targets or provide a timeline.
Referring to the campaign, Trump said the United States had inflicted significant damage on Iran and added that Washington might take further action. His remarks indicated that military options remained open, rather than confirming that another operation had been ordered.
Trump maintained that many Americans supported his approach, even if others disagreed with the decision to pursue military action. He argued that previous administrations should have addressed the Iranian nuclear issue earlier.
The President also linked the conflict to the domestic political climate, saying Republican electoral prospects would depend significantly on voter turnout. His comments highlighted the challenge facing the party as it seeks to maintain support while the administration deals with the consequences of the war.
Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that expanding conflicts were creating economic disruptions far beyond the regions directly affected by fighting.
Speaking in New York, Guterres said the consequences of war were spreading through energy markets, shipping routes, supply chains and financial systems, affecting households and businesses worldwide.
He highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments, warning that developments in the region could quickly affect ordinary people and local markets.
“The distance from the Strait of Hormuz to a family home or village market is shorter than we think,” Guterres said.
The UN chief called for an end to the fighting, protection of civilians and renewed diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation. He also announced plans to travel to Egypt on Friday.
Asked about the visit, Guterres described Egypt as one of the mediators involved in efforts to address the conflict between the United States and Iran. However, he did not announce any breakthrough in negotiations or confirm a meeting between American and Iranian representatives.
The contrasting remarks underscored the uncertainty surrounding the conflict. Trump left open the possibility of additional military action, while the United Nations emphasised diplomacy and the wider humanitarian and economic consequences.
With no confirmed timetable for ending the hostilities, the situation continues to raise concerns over regional stability, global energy security and the potential impact on the world economy.
