Washington, Sept 2026 : US President Donald Trump has vowed a strong response against Iran after Tehran launched ballistic missiles at US forces stationed in Jordan, escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking to Fox News in a phone interview on Monday, Trump said the United States would respond forcefully to the Iranian attack. “We’re going to hit them hard,” he said, adding that there “will be a response.”
Trump said US forces had intercepted most of the incoming missiles but deliberately allowed one missile to pass through the air defence system after determining that it posed no threat to any target. He did not provide further details about the missile or the circumstances surrounding the decision.
Despite his tough warning, Trump indicated that the possibility of diplomatic engagement with Iran had not been completely ruled out. He claimed that Tehran was eager to hold talks but expressed uncertainty about whether an agreement could ultimately be reached.
“They want to meet so badly,” Trump said, while adding that he was unsure whether the US could “count on a deal with them.” He also pointed to the impact of American sanctions on Iran, saying the measures were “kicking in really strongly.”
Iran reportedly launched at least eight ballistic missiles at US forces in Jordan on Sunday, following a US airstrike targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launchers on Iran’s Larak Island. According to Fox News, citing a US source, the missile attack did not result in any significant impacts.
Iran, however, offered a different account of the damage caused by the US strike. Iranian state-linked Fars news agency, citing an IRGC statement, reported that Iranian forces targeted “technical and maintenance infrastructure” and areas where “enemy fighter jets” were stationed at the King Hussein and Al-Azraq US bases in Jordan.
The US Central Command described its earlier operation as a “limited, precise action” against Iranian minelaying forces. Washington said the targeted forces posed an imminent threat to commercial shipping and the uninterrupted movement of global commerce through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Following the US operation, the IRGC said several military personnel and civilians had been killed or wounded and vowed that the attack would be met with “punishment for the aggressor.”
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing unofficial reports, said at least two people were killed and two others injured in what it described as a US drone attack on Larak Island.
The latest exchange of attacks marks a sharp escalation in hostilities between the two countries and raises concerns over the possibility of further military action in the region. With Trump warning of retaliation while leaving a narrow opening for talks, the situation remains highly volatile.
