Washington, Sept 2026 : US President Donald Trump has warned that the American military is prepared to launch further strikes against Iran “any time we want”, following a fresh round of attacks that has heightened tensions across the Middle East and raised concerns over civilian casualties and regional stability.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump described the latest US operation as a “very heavy attack” and said American forces remained prepared to conduct additional military action if deemed necessary.
“It was a very heavy attack last night, and we're prepared to do another one any time we want,” Trump said.
Trump claimed that the US military had destroyed newly installed Iranian military equipment along the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a critical global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies passes.
The latest escalation has drawn attention after Iranian officials said a US strike on Tuesday night hit a wedding gathering in southern Iran. According to Iranian authorities, at least four people were killed and dozens of others injured in the incident.
The US Central Command said it was examining the reports concerning the alleged civilian casualties. The command maintained that the US military does not target civilians.
The situation has also been accompanied by provocative rhetoric surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Trump was asked about reports that he intended to rename the strategic waterway after himself. He dismissed the idea on Wednesday, saying it had merely been “thrown out there”.
Earlier, however, Trump had floated the possibility in a post on Truth Social, asking whether the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed the “TRUMP STRAIT” after claiming that the United States had brought the waterway under its control.
The comments followed Trump’s earlier remarks at a rally in Long Island last month, when he reportedly said that after defeating Iran, he would consider declaring the Strait of Hormuz a US territory.
Trump has repeatedly warned Iran against actions that could threaten American forces or international shipping. His latest comments indicate that Washington is maintaining a readiness for further military operations as tensions with Tehran remain high.
Meanwhile, the renewed fighting has triggered strong concern at the United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grave alarm over the latest exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran, particularly reports of civilian casualties.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres was “deeply alarmed” by reports that a strike had hit a wedding ceremony in Iran. The Secretary-General condemned all attacks against civilians and stressed that all parties must comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law.
Guterres specifically highlighted the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution, which require parties to armed conflicts to distinguish between civilians and military targets and take steps to minimise civilian harm.
The UN chief also called for an immediate halt to military action and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, warning against rhetoric or actions that could further escalate an already volatile situation.
Dujarric said the escalation was affecting airspace and critical shipping routes across the region, with few countries likely to remain insulated from the consequences.
“Further escalation” could have devastating consequences for civilians, the wider Middle East and countries beyond the region, the spokesperson warned.
The UN also expressed concern that the renewed conflict could deepen humanitarian pressures at a time when relief operations across the region are already overstretched and underfunded.
Guterres has urged Washington and Tehran to urgently return to diplomacy, stressing that a comprehensive and lasting settlement can be achieved only through dialogue and negotiations.
