Through ‘Marvel’, the Police Force Will Get Support from Artificial Intelligence.

Mumbai : The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly increasing worldwide. Recently, the ‘Marvel’ company has been established in Maharashtra, and the state’s police force will soon benefit from AI in solving crimes. This initiative will also position Maharashtra as a leader in various fields in the future.

The state government has established ‘Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement’ (MARVEL) to strengthen intelligence capabilities, improve crime prediction, and enable the police force to perform more effectively using artificial intelligence. Maharashtra is the first state in India to adopt this technology in law enforcement. By analyzing available data, it will be possible to predict potential crime locations and where law and order might break down.

The state government, Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, and M. Pinaka Technologies Private Limited have formed a tripartite agreement. This government company was registered under the Companies Act 2013 on March 22, 2024. Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Mr. Fadnavis presided over a meeting at the Police Gymkhana in Mumbai, attended by Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary (Home Department) Sujata Saunik, Director General of Police Rashmi Shukla, Brihanmumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, and Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, where a presentation was made.

Crime Solving Through Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is being used to solve complex problems by leveraging human cognition and reasoning-based decision-making capabilities. This will greatly benefit the police force in solving crimes. Various government departments currently have access to vast amounts of information, and the police force receives a significant amount of data about crimes and criminals. Cyber and financial crimes are also on the rise, with new methods being adopted to defraud citizens. Teaching modern computers to analyze and make human-like decisions using this information can be highly beneficial. Following this initiative, the state cabinet decided to establish a special purpose vehicle for the use of AI in the Maharashtra Police Force during its meeting on March 16, 2024.

Marvel’s Office in Nagpur

M. Pinaka Technologies Private Limited, a Chennai-based company with experience providing AI solutions to the Indian Navy, Intelligence Department, Andhra Pradesh, Income Tax Department, SEBI, etc., is involved in this activity. The office of ‘Marvel’ is located at the Indian Institute of Management in Nagpur to utilize the institute’s expertise. While ‘Pinaka’ will provide AI solutions as per the police force’s needs, the Indian Institute of Management will collaborate in research and training. The Superintendent of Police, Nagpur (Rural), the Director of the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, and the Director of M. Pinaka Technologies Private Limited will serve on the Board of Directors, with the Superintendent of Police, Nagpur (Rural), acting as the ex-officio Chief Executive Officer.
