Ahmedabad, Aug 2026 : Gujarat has accelerated preparations for hosting the landmark 2030 Commonwealth Games after officially receiving the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton during the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Games. The symbolic handover marks the formal transition of hosting responsibilities to India, with Ahmedabad set to stage the centenary edition of the prestigious multi-sport event. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who was part of the Indian delegation in Glasgow, said the state government would now intensify its efforts to ensure Ahmedabad is fully prepared to host one of the biggest international sporting events in the world.
Speaking to reporters after returning from Scotland, he described the handover ceremony as a proud and historic moment for both Gujarat and the country. During the closing ceremony in Glasgow, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha received the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton, officially launching the countdown to the 2030 Games.
The ceremony signified India's emergence as the next host nation and underscored Ahmedabad's growing stature as an international sporting destination. Sanghavi said the visit to Glasgow provided valuable insights into the planning, logistics and operational management required to successfully conduct a global sporting event. Officials from Gujarat closely studied the organisation of the Games, including venue management, athlete services, security arrangements, transportation systems, volunteer programmes and fan engagement initiatives, which will help shape preparations for the Ahmedabad edition.
The Deputy Chief Minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for transforming India's sporting ecosystem, stating that sports and youth development have received unprecedented encouragement over the past decade. He highlighted initiatives such as the Fit India Movement, which has promoted fitness as a nationwide movement, and the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, aimed at building a healthier and more responsible youth by discouraging substance abuse. He also noted that the Centre's increased investment in sports infrastructure has enabled athletes to access world-class training facilities, modern coaching systems and better financial support.
According to him, these initiatives have significantly improved India's performances at major international sporting events while inspiring greater youth participation across the country. Speaking about Gujarat's preparations, Sanghavi said the state government is implementing a comprehensive roadmap to strengthen sporting infrastructure ahead of 2030. Work is underway to develop and upgrade international-standard stadiums, training centres, athlete accommodation and supporting facilities that will meet global benchmarks for hosting a mega sporting event.
He emphasised that both the Central and Gujarat governments are working in close coordination to ensure that the Commonwealth Games leave behind a lasting sporting legacy. Beyond hosting the event successfully, the focus is on creating sustainable infrastructure that will benefit future generations of Indian athletes and promote sports culture across the state. The Deputy Chief Minister added that the government remains committed to providing athletes from Gujarat and across India with improved opportunities, advanced facilities and institutional support to help them excel at national and international competitions.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games will be particularly significant as they mark the centenary edition of the event. Unlike the streamlined Glasgow 2026 Games, which featured a reduced sports programme, Commonwealth Sport officials have indicated that the Ahmedabad edition is expected to restore and expand the list of disciplines, making it one of the most comprehensive editions in the event's history. With the ceremonial handover complete, Ahmedabad has officially begun its journey towards hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
The event is expected to enhance India's global sporting profile, boost infrastructure development, generate tourism and investment, and create new opportunities for athletes while showcasing Gujarat's capabilities as a world-class destination for international sporting events.
