Washington, Aug 2026 : The United States military said Thursday that it was closely monitoring North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launch and consulting with regional allies, while maintaining that the test did not pose an immediate threat to US territory, personnel or allied forces.
The US Pacific Command issued the statement hours after North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea. The launch came ahead of the annual South Korea-US joint military exercise, which Pyongyang has repeatedly criticised as preparation for a possible invasion.
“We are aware of the missile launch and are consulting closely with our allies and partners,” the US command said in a statement. It added that, based on the initial assessment, the incident did not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory or to Washington’s regional allies.
The command also reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to defending its homeland and its allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missile was launched from the Wonsan area on North Korea’s eastern coast at around 5 p.m. local time. The JCS did not immediately provide detailed information about the missile’s type, flight distance or altitude.
South Korean and US military authorities are jointly analysing the technical specifications of the missile. The JCS said the two countries had detected North Korean military activity from the early stages of the launch and were sharing relevant information.
“While strengthening monitoring and surveillance against potential additional launches, our military is maintaining a full readiness posture and closely sharing relevant information with the United States and Japan,” the JCS said.
The launch is the latest in a series of weapons tests by Pyongyang as tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea last conducted a test involving a tactical ballistic missile, new multiple rocket launchers and other weapons on June 25.
The latest missile test has also raised concerns because it comes shortly before the scheduled Ulchi Freedom Shield, the annual summertime military exercise conducted jointly by South Korea and the United States. The exercise is expected to take place later this month and is routinely condemned by North Korea, which views such drills as a rehearsal for military action against it.
South Korea responded quickly to Thursday’s launch. The presidential National Security Office convened an emergency meeting involving officials from the Defence Ministry and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Officials were instructed to maintain a heightened state of readiness, closely monitor developments and assess the potential impact of the missile launch on South Korea’s national security.
Seoul also described the launch as a provocation and said it violated United Nations Security Council resolutions prohibiting North Korea from developing and testing ballistic missile technology.
The South Korean government called on Pyongyang to immediately halt such activities, while stressing the importance of maintaining close security cooperation with Washington and Tokyo.
The latest launch underscores continuing tensions surrounding North Korea’s missile programme and the upcoming South Korea-US military exercises, with regional authorities remaining on alert for any further weapons tests or military activity from Pyongyang.
