Lawyer Files Complaint Against Five Opposition MPs Over Parliament Protest

Patna, Aug 2026 : A senior advocate from the Jamui Civil Court has filed a complaint against five opposition Members of Parliament, alleging that a symbolic protest staged inside the Parliament complex hurt religious sentiments and compromised the dignity of the country's highest legislative institution.

The complaint was filed by advocate Rajiv Ranjan before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Jamui and has been registered as Case No. 1004/2026. The court is expected to announce a date for hearing the matter.

The complaint names Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, and Samajwadi Party MPs Awadhesh Prasad, representing Faizabad, Ruchi Veera from Moradabad and Dharmendra Yadav from Azamgarh.

According to the complainant, the MPs staged what he described as a dramatic demonstration inside the Parliament complex, which he alleged was inappropriate given the constitutional significance of the institution.

Ranjan further alleged that the protest was organised primarily to draw public and media attention, despite the issue being examined by the Supreme Court and a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Speaking about his complaint, the advocate said the demonstration had caused him personal and social distress and alleged that it had also offended the religious sentiments of followers of Sanatan Dharma.

“Rahul Gandhi, Pappu Yadav and other MPs have hurt the religious sentiments of followers of Sanatan Dharma,” Ranjan alleged, while asserting that the community's traditionally tolerant nature should not be interpreted as acceptance of such demonstrations.

The complaint relates to a protest staged during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament over allegations concerning the alleged misuse or misappropriation of donations associated with the Ram Mandir.

As part of the demonstration, Pappu Yadav, an Independent MP from Purnea, reportedly dressed as a priest and sat inside the Parliament complex with a donation box. Other opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, participated in the symbolic protest by placing money into the box.

The demonstration subsequently featured a theatrical act in which Pappu Yadav ran away carrying the donation box. The opposition used the performance to highlight its allegations regarding the handling of donations associated with the Ram Mandir.

The protest drew attention because of its unconventional nature and the involvement of several opposition MPs. The complainant has now sought legal action, arguing that the demonstration crossed the limits of acceptable conduct within the Parliament complex and affected religious sentiments.

The allegations contained in the complaint have not been adjudicated by the court. The accused MPs have not been convicted or found guilty of any offence in connection with the complaint.

The matter is now before the Jamui court, which will determine the next course of proceedings after considering the complaint and relevant legal provisions.
