New Delhi, September 2026: Adani Defence and Aerospace has entered into a five-year agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles Pvt Ltd (IRRPL) to supply indigenously manufactured 7.62x39 mm ammunition for AK-203 assault rifles being produced in India, further strengthening the domestic supply chain supporting the India-Russia rifle programme.
Under the agreement, Adani Defence will provide the small-calibre ammunition required for the AK-203 programme over a period of five years. The company said the arrangement will establish an Indian source for a key consumable and help ensure continuity of ammunition supplies throughout the contract period.
The agreement connects two major components of the AK-203 programme within India’s growing defence manufacturing ecosystem — rifle production by IRRPL and ammunition manufacturing by Adani Defence. The development is expected to deepen localisation and expand domestic participation in the India-Russia defence manufacturing partnership.
Indo-Russian Rifles was established in 2019 under an India-Russia intergovernmental agreement to manufacture AK-203 assault rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. Its manufacturing facility is located at Korwa in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district.
IRRPL is a joint venture involving Indian entities Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd and Munitions India Ltd, along with Russian partners Concern Kalashnikov and Rosoboronexport. The venture was created to facilitate indigenous production of the AK-203 platform in India.
The Ministry of Defence had signed a contract with IRRPL in December 2021 for the manufacture of 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles at the Korwa facility. The programme was intended to increase domestic production of small arms while strengthening India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
The latest agreement expands the indigenous manufacturing footprint around the programme by linking locally produced assault rifles with domestically manufactured ammunition. This integration is expected to improve supply-chain resilience and reduce dependence on overseas sources for ammunition required by the weapon system.
Adani Defence has been expanding its presence in the small-calibre ammunition segment in India, including through its manufacturing facility in Kanpur. The latest agreement further strengthens the company’s role in building domestic capabilities across the small-arms and ammunition supply chain.
The pact also supports the government’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to increase self-reliance in defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imports.
By sourcing ammunition domestically for rifles manufactured in India, the agreement further localises the AK-203 programme and creates a more integrated production ecosystem. It also represents another step towards developing a resilient Indian defence industrial base capable of supporting the Armed Forces with critical equipment and consumables.
The five-year arrangement is expected to provide greater predictability in ammunition availability while reinforcing cooperation between Indian defence manufacturers involved in the AK-203 programme.
