New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday chaired a high-level review meeting on India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad, along with preparations for two other major international sporting events scheduled to be held in the Gujarat city.
India is seeking to host the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad and is also preparing to stage the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2029 Police and Fire Games. The Centre has positioned these events as part of its broader effort to establish India as a major global sporting destination.
Sharing details of the meeting on X, Shah said the Narendra Modi-led government remains firmly committed to bringing major international sporting events to India and strengthening the country's position on the global sports map.
“Modi Govt is firmly committed to establishing India as a global sporting destination by hosting international sporting events,” Shah said in his post.
He added that he had chaired a review meeting on India's 2036 Olympic bid as well as preparations for the 2029 Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya attended the meeting along with senior officials from his ministry and representatives of the Gujarat government. The participants reviewed the preparations for the three major events and assessed the progress made on India’s Olympic bid.
The meeting assumes significance as Ahmedabad is being projected as the centrepiece of India’s ambitions to host some of the world’s biggest sporting events. The proposed Olympic bid will require extensive coordination between the Centre, Gujarat government and sporting authorities to develop infrastructure and ensure international-level facilities.
India’s preparations for the Commonwealth Games also received a boost after the conclusion of the 2026 edition in Glasgow, Scotland. An Indian delegation representing Ahmedabad received the Commonwealth Games flag as the next host city.
The flag was handed over to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who subsequently returned to the state and formally presented it to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during a state Cabinet meeting.
The hosting of the 2029 Police and Fire Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games is expected to provide India with valuable experience ahead of its ambitious 2036 Olympic bid.
