Lucknow, October 2026 : To provide safe, pure and quality food items to the people during the Navratri festival, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (UPFSDA) has intensified enforcement action across the state under the "Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai" campaign. In the action that continued until late night on October 9, state and district-level enforcement teams conducted intensive inspections of establishments engaged in the manufacture, storage and sale of food items. Under the campaign, 20,924 kg of food items have been seized, with an estimated total value of Rs 66 lakh 87 thousand 58. In addition, 176 food samples have been collected. During the enforcement , 4,273 kg of food items found unfit for human consumption were destroyed, with an estimated value of Rs 63,900. Under the campaign, the process of suspending the licenses of two food business operators is underway. Meanwhile, the process of filing cases is underway against one establishment for operating without a license. In addition, around 58 corrective notices have been issued to various food establishments.

During the action, the quality and purity of ghee, edible oil, vanaspati, buckwheat (kuttu) and water chestnut (singhara) flour, sabudana and other fasting foods, which are used especially during Navratri, were checked. Where food safety irregularities were found, action was taken under the relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including seizing food items, taking samples, destroying food items unfit for human consumption, and taking legal action against the concerned establishments.

Action on large consignments of ghee, strictness in Bareilly and Etah too

Ahead of Navratri, the department kept special watch on the quality of ghee. In Bareilly, 3,281 kg of ghee was seized from three establishments, with a total value of Rs 21 lakh 22 thousand 120. From the VK Shaw establishment, 2,280 kg of ghee worth Rs 14 lakh 52 thousand 200 was seized; from the establishment of Ajay Kumar Gupta, 319 kg of ghee worth Rs 2 lakh 19 thousand 800; and from Bharat Ghee establishment, 682 kg of ghee worth Rs 4 lakh 50 thousand 120. In Etah, 2,544 kg of ghee and butter was seized from Shri Baba Dairy. Its value is Rs 17 lakh 16 thousand 120. This quantity is more than 25 quintals. In Budaun, 538 kg of ghee was seized from the establishment of Babu Ram Ramesh Chandra, valued at Rs 3 lakh 63 thousand 150.

In Lucknow, 1,321 kg of food items seized, including 748 kg of ghee

In the capital Lucknow, 748 kg of ghee was seized from Bhairav Ghee Bhandar on the basis of irregularities. Its estimated value is Rs 4 lakh 22 thousand 629. In addition, 573 kg of food items, including buckwheat flour and buckwheat groats, were seized from other establishments, valued at Rs 88 thousand 260.

In Noida, 3,559 kg of ground spices seized; license suspension and FIR

In Gautam Buddh Nagar, i.e., Noida, in the action against Dharmesh Industries, 3,559 kg of ground spices were seized after coriander stalks, colour and husk were found to have been used in the spices. Their estimated value is stated to be around Rs 7 lakh. In the case, action is underway to suspend the license of the establishment concerned and to register an FIR.

In Ghaziabad, sabudana seized on grounds of misbranding

In Ghaziabad, action was taken regarding sabudana, ghee and buckwheat flour. On the grounds of misbranding, 2,848 kg of sabudana was seized, with an estimated value of Rs 1 lakh 35 thousand 564. In addition, 75 kg of Dairy Craft brand ghee worth Rs 58,500 and 76 kg of buckwheat flour worth Rs 24,750 were seized. Two samples of ghee were also taken from Metro Cash and Carry India Private Limited, located at Plot No. 1/1, SSGT Road, Ghaziabad. In addition, 210 litres of Annapurna brand ghee, valued at Rs 2 lakh, and 76 litres of Param brand ghee, valued at Rs 48,148, were seized.

In Saharanpur, 6,000 kg of turmeric seized

In Saharanpur, around 6,000 kg of turmeric kept in unhygienic conditions was seized. Its value is Rs 6 lakh 83 thousand 772. In addition, 298 kg of suspicious buckwheat flour, with an estimated value of Rs 17 thousand 284, was also seized.

In Kanpur, action on buckwheat-related food items

In Kanpur, a total of 390 kg of food items, including buckwheat and buckwheat flour, were seized from various establishments, with a total value of Rs 81 thousand 300. Meanwhile, 60 kg of whole buckwheat was seized from Hari Krishna Enterprises because it was found in unhygienic condition. Its value is recorded in the departmental details as Rs 1.50 lakh.

In Mau, contaminated milk and milk cake destroyed

In Mau, 60 kg of milk found to be curdled and contaminated at an establishment was destroyed. Its value is Rs 3,600. In addition, 90 kg of milk cake was also destroyed, with an estimated value of Rs 18,000. In Lakhimpur, during divisional enforcement action, 210 kg of ghee was seized from an establishment. Its estimated value is Rs 1 lakh 34 thousand 400.

Action in Unnao too

In Unnao, on the Agra Expressway, action was taken on 4 quintals of contaminated food material from a pickup vehicle coming towards Lucknow. In addition, departmental teams also inspected food establishments in Farrukhabad (including Arinsha Milk Products Limited), as well as in Aligarh and Kasganj. During the action, samples of food items were taken and are being sent for testing as per rules.

No unnecessary harassment of small shopkeepers

UPFSDA Commissioner Dr. Roshan Jacob has given clear instructions to the enforcement teams that small shopkeepers and retail sellers should not be unnecessarily harassed in the name of inspection and action. The aim of the campaign is to take effective action, as per rules, against traders involved in serious irregularities, adulterators, and establishments manufacturing or selling misbranded food items. The enforcement teams have been instructed to ensure that action is taken while following fairness, transparency and due legal process.
