Colombo, August 2026 : India declared their first innings at 503/9 in 138 overs after wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel struck his second Test century on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground on Monday.
Jurel remained unbeaten on a commanding 115 off 177 deliveries, striking nine fours and two sixes during an impressive innings that anchored India’s lower-order resistance. His century came at a crucial stage after rain interrupted play for two hours and 10 minutes, with India resuming on a strong footing.
Jurel shared several important partnerships during the innings, the most significant being a 112-run stand with Rishabh Pant, who contributed a valuable 63. Their partnership helped India build a formidable total and put Sri Lanka under considerable pressure.
Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler was pacer Asitha Fernando, who finished with four wickets for 106 runs. Prabath Jayasuriya claimed two wickets but conceded 132 runs, while Keshara Nuwantha also picked up two wickets.
When play resumed after the rain delay, Jurel was unbeaten on 95 and needed just five runs to reach his maiden Test century in Sri Lanka. Batting alongside Mohammed Siraj, he showed considerable patience despite Sri Lanka placing several close-in fielders around him.
Siraj opened his account with a pull towards long leg, but Jurel remained composed as the hosts attempted to restrict the singles and create pressure. He played out a maiden over from Jayasuriya as Sri Lanka looked to force him into making a mistake.
The breakthrough moment in Jurel’s innings came after another 22 deliveries. He drove a full delivery from Fernando straight over the bowler’s head and completed a risky single after a direct hit narrowly missed the stumps.
The century triggered an emotional celebration. Jurel lifted his sleeve to reveal a tattoo bearing the words “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”, before being embraced by Siraj in the middle.
Having completed his hundred, Jurel immediately switched to an attacking mode. He stepped down the track and launched Fernando over long-on for a six, underlining his confidence.
Jayasuriya soon ended Siraj’s 29-ball stay at the crease, trapping the fast bowler leg before wicket with a slider. India opted for a review, but the decision remained unchanged.
Jurel continued his assault after being joined by Prasidh Krishna. He pulled another delivery from Fernando over deep backward square leg for six before collecting two runs from a low full toss.
Krishna then added a boundary through cover off another low full toss, taking India beyond the 500-run mark and giving captain Shubman Gill the opportunity to declare.
Gill subsequently signalled for Jurel and Krishna to return, bringing India’s innings to an end at 503/9 and giving the visitors an opportunity to attack Sri Lanka with the new ball.
With limited time remaining in the day, Sri Lanka were left with roughly an hour to bat before stumps, facing the challenge of negotiating India’s bowling attack after conceding a substantial first-innings total.
