Cairo, Sept 2026 : Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Wednesday reiterated Egypt’s opposition to any plan aimed at displacing Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, saying Cairo remains committed to protecting Palestinian rights and supporting efforts toward a political settlement.
Sisi made the remarks during a meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo, where the two leaders discussed developments in Gaza and the broader Palestinian issue. The Egyptian presidency reaffirmed its opposition to any attempt to undermine the Palestinian cause or alter the demographic character of the territory.
Egypt has consistently rejected proposals for the permanent or temporary displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and has backed the Palestinian Authority and diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a political resolution. Earlier this month, Egypt and several Arab and Muslim countries also condemned statements by Israeli officials concerning possible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza.
Abbas welcomed Egypt’s position in support of Palestinian rights and reiterated that Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian state. Cairo also said it would continue working with mediators to support implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, facilitate humanitarian assistance and contribute to reconstruction efforts.
Sisi’s latest comments came amid renewed discussion in Israel over the future of military operations in Gaza and proposals concerning the departure of Palestinians from the territory.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has said that the Israeli military is prepared to resume large-scale operations in Gaza if ordered to do so as part of efforts to eliminate Hamas. Katz has also discussed a plan to facilitate the departure of Palestinians from Gaza, describing the proposed movement as voluntary. He has said Israel was considering arrangements involving land and sea routes and was awaiting discussions with the United States regarding possible destinations.
The United States has rejected any suggestion that it supports the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said Washington does not have a plan to forcibly remove Palestinians from the territory.
The issue remains particularly sensitive for Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza and has played a central role in ceasefire and mediation efforts. Cairo has repeatedly stressed that Palestinians should remain on their land and that Gaza should form part of a future Palestinian state.
The Gaza conflict has caused extensive destruction and displaced the vast majority of the territory’s population. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the reported Palestinian death toll since the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, stood at 73,789 as of September 15, with 174,798 people reported injured. The ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its overall casualty figures.
The humanitarian situation remains difficult, with damaged infrastructure, shortages of essential supplies and large numbers of displaced people continuing to pose challenges for aid agencies and local authorities. Recent reports have also highlighted the dangers faced by Palestinians sheltering in damaged buildings and other inadequate facilities.
The latest statements from Cairo come as uncertainty continues over the durability of the Gaza ceasefire and the political future of the territory. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained that Israel will not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is disarmed, while Egypt continues to support diplomatic efforts focused on maintaining the ceasefire, delivering humanitarian assistance and advancing reconstruction.
The positions expressed by Egypt and the Palestinian leadership underline the continuing dispute over Gaza’s future, including questions of territorial control, reconstruction, security arrangements and the status of the Palestinian population.
