Birmingham, Sept 2026 : England completed a historic 3-0 Test series whitewash against Pakistan after defeating the visitors by eight wickets in the third and final Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The victory marked England’s first-ever home series whitewash of Pakistan and capped a dominant campaign in which the hosts overcame the visitors in all three Tests.
Chasing a modest target of 130 in the fourth innings, England were briefly put under pressure by Mohammad Abbas, who struck early to give Pakistan hope of defending the total. However, Joe Root and Jordan Cox remained composed and produced an unbeaten partnership to guide England home.
Root scored 62 while Cox made 59 as the pair shared an unbroken 128-run stand for the third wicket. Their partnership ended Pakistan’s hopes of staging an unlikely comeback and secured a comprehensive eight-wicket victory for the hosts.
Pakistan, however, showed considerably more resistance with the bat in the second innings of the third Test. After being dismissed for below 200 in their earlier innings during the series, the visitors produced a vastly improved effort, scoring 449 to give themselves a chance of extending the contest.
Debutant Razaullah emerged as one of Pakistan’s standout performers. After taking four wickets in England’s first innings, he produced an attacking 81 off just 63 balls in the second innings.
Razaullah smashed nine sixes during his entertaining knock, the most by a player on Test debut. His aggressive batting briefly raised hopes that Pakistan could set England a challenging target.
Captain Shan Masood also played a crucial role, scoring 95, while Babar Azam contributed 76 and opener Azam Awais made 59. Mohammad Abbas added 42 and shared a valuable 120-run ninth-wicket partnership with Razaullah.
Pakistan’s recovery came after England had made early inroads. Ollie Robinson dismissed Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique for ducks, with Ayub recording a pair after also failing to score in Pakistan’s first innings.
England’s bowlers were required to work harder than in the previous Tests. Gus Atkinson claimed three wickets, while Robinson, Josh Tongue and Dan Lawrence took two wickets each as England eventually wrapped up Pakistan’s innings.
England had opted to bowl first after winning the toss, and Tongue, Jofra Archer and Robinson combined to dismiss Pakistan for a low first-innings total. Saud Shakeel was the only significant contributor among Pakistan’s top eight batters, scoring 43. Razaullah and Abbas offered some resistance with scores of 11 and 21 respectively.
England then responded strongly with the bat. Emilio Gay scored 60, while Harry Brook made 75, Lawrence contributed 65 and Jamie Smith scored 69. Robinson also registered a half-century with a score of 50. However, none of England’s batters managed to convert their innings into a century.
Despite Pakistan’s improved second-innings performance, the target of 130 proved insufficient to seriously challenge England. Abbas’ early strikes briefly raised hopes of a dramatic turnaround, but Root and Cox ensured there was no late twist.
Root’s unbeaten half-century also provided a fitting conclusion to the series, with the experienced batter beginning and ending the campaign with a fifty.
England’s emphatic eight-wicket win at Edgbaston completed a 3-0 sweep and underlined their superiority throughout the series. Pakistan’s spirited final Test innings provided their best batting performance of the contest, but England’s consistency with both bat and ball ultimately proved decisive.
