Department's special focus on cleanliness, food quality, pest control, and segregation of veg-non-veg food items
Lucknow, September 2026 : With the objective of providing safe and quality food items to consumers in Uttar Pradesh, the special inspection campaign against fast food retail chains and restaurants continues under the "Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai" campaign being run by the food safety and drug administration department. Under the campaign, on Monday, special teams of food safety officers carried out extensive inspections in Kanpur Nagar, Agra, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj, and Varanasi.
Department teams inspected more than 180 fast food retail chain and restaurant units in these five districts until late evening. More than 110 Improvement Notices were issued where serious quality were found. Meanwhile, upon finding serious violations of food safety and hygiene standards, the licenses of 12 establishments and one food court were suspended and their food business was shut down. The Department has made clear that wherever serious deficiencies are found, the food business will not be allowed to operate until improvements are made.
Special inspection campaign in five districts
In Kanpur Nagar, 38 teams inspected 52 units. In Agra, 21 teams inspected 38 units, in Ghaziabad, 36 teams inspected 80 units, in Prayagraj, 15 teams inspected 30 units, and in Varanasi, 20 teams inspected 40 units. Inspections and necessary action continue in all districts.
Serious quality issues were found at several establishments in Kanpur Nagar
During inspections in Kanpur Nagar, serious quality issues related to food safety and hygiene were found at several establishments. At the food court of Rave Moti Mall, extremely poor hygiene and sanitary conditions, excessive dirt, damaged walls, and food items kept on the floor were found. In view of this, all 10 establishments operating in the food court were ordered to remain closed until improvements are made.
At La Pinoz Pizza, Sapphire Mall, insect infestation, expired sauces and dressings, use of the same utensils for both veg and non-veg food items, and poor-quality paneer were found, and license suspension was recommended.
At Welfel Sam Keshav Raj and Sons, Swaroop Nagar, proprietary foods were found without manufacturing date, expiry date, and ingredient details mentioned. Since essential food-related information was not being provided to consumers, closure of business was recommended until improvements are made.
At Nii Haau, Square Mall, choked drainage, extremely poor hygiene and sanitary conditions, and use of the same utensils for veg and non-veg food items were found. In view of these deficiencies, closure of business was recommended until improvements are made.
At Biryani Queen, Square Mall, insects in the flour, excessive dirt at the preparation site, and repeated reuse of cooking oil along with excessive dirt in the oil were found. Necessary action is being taken in the matter.
At Spicy Fast Food restaurant, M Block, Kidwai Nagar, extremely poor hygiene and sanitary conditions, operation of the establishment near an open drain, and foul smell in the kitchen area were found. Closure of business was recommended until cleanliness and hygiene arrangements are improved.
At Global Bakers and Café, Harbans Mohal, extremely poor hygiene and sanitary conditions, joint storage and preparation of veg and non-veg food items, poor drainage, and an extremely dirty kitchen platform were found. Closure of the establishment was recommended until improvements are made.
Action taken in Agra over poor drainage and cleanliness arrangements
In Agra, The Park Restaurant, Sadar Bazaar, was inspected. The drainage system was found choked, and hygiene and sanitary conditions in the kitchen area were found extremely poor. In view of the serious deficiencies, closure of the food business was recommended until cleanliness and hygiene arrangements are improved.
Deficiencies found at café and pizza outlet in Varanasi
In Varanasi, inspection of Cafe Coffee Day Global Ltd., Sarnath Building, Mahmoorganj, found the infrastructure to be in poor condition. There was a possibility of food contamination due to damaged false ceiling, excessive dirt in the storage area, and unhygienic toilets.
Similarly, at La Pinoz, Miyan Mahal, Ardali Bazaar, insect infestation was found around the dustbin. Also, adequate segregation arrangements for the preparation of veg and non-veg food items were not found.
Quality of raw meat found suspicious in Prayagraj
In Prayagraj, during the inspection of Aryan Family Delight, PVR Mall, proper arrangements for storage of raw material and cooked food were not found, and hygiene and sanitary conditions were found poor. Separate frying pans and cooking stoves were being used for non-veg food items; however, the quality of raw meat was found suspicious. Necessary action in accordance with food safety standards is being taken in the matter.
Extensive inspection in Ghaziabad as well
In Ghaziabad, 36 teams inspected 80 fast food retail chain units. Departmental teams checked the quality of food items, manufacturing and storage conditions, cleanliness, kitchen hygiene, pest control, drainage, separate storage of food items, and other necessary standards related to the food business at the establishments. Where quality issues were found, improvement notices were issued as per rules, and in serious cases, the process of action is being taken forward.
Safe food, clean establishments, and aware consumers
Through the "Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai" campaign, the food safety and drug administration department is emphasizing ensuring that food business operators mandatorily comply with prescribed food safety and hygiene standards. The department teams are examining not just the quality of food items but also important aspects such as kitchen hygiene, sanitation, pest control, drainage, food storage, raw material quality, veg and non-veg food segregation, and food labeling. The department's objective is not merely to take action, but to increase the sense of responsibility toward food safety among food business operators and to provide safe food to consumers. Where food quality are correctable, improvement notices are being issued to give an opportunity for improvement, while for serious irregularities that pose a risk to public health, action such as shutting down the food business and suspending licenses is being taken.
