New Delhi, Nov 2026 : The Democratic Party has vowed to make ending the ongoing war with Iran a top priority following its sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, delivering a major political setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
According to a BBC report, Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer said bringing the conflict to an end would be central to his party's agenda. He indicated that Democrats could even consider blocking funding for the Department of Defence if that became necessary to secure a swift end to the war.
Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives and a likely candidate for the position of Speaker, said his party would hold the Trump administration accountable and act as a check on what he described as an “out-of-control executive branch”.
“We don’t work for Donald Trump. We don’t work for JD Vance. We don’t work for the Supreme Court. We work for the American people,” Jeffries said, according to the BBC.
He also accused what he called the “Trump Cartel” of engaging in massive corruption and promised that those responsible would be held accountable.
The election results have also had an immediate impact on global energy markets, with crude oil prices falling sharply to their lowest levels in two months. Investors appeared to respond to expectations that the Democratic victory could encourage renewed diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
However, analysts have cautioned that expectations of an early breakthrough may be premature, given the significant differences between the two countries and the complexities involved in negotiations.
Iran is expected to seek substantial concessions before agreeing to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz and allow commercial shipping to resume normal operations. The strategic waterway is crucial to global energy supplies, with around 20 per cent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments normally passing through it.
The effective closure of the strait during the conflict had disrupted energy supplies and pushed global oil and gas prices higher, raising concerns about inflation and economic stability.
President Trump has acknowledged that the war with Iran played a major role in the Republican Party's electoral defeat. Vice-President JD Vance has also admitted that the conflict contributed to the party's poor performance.
Meanwhile, Russia has indicated that the Democratic victory would not bring about a change in Washington's policy towards Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow would continue to pursue its interests, either through military action or diplomatic negotiations.
China, on the other hand, has called for a “constructive, strategically stable China-US relationship” ahead of a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month.
Beijing is expected to seek progress on a trade agreement during the meeting. Questions have also emerged over whether Taiwan could become part of the discussions, given its strategic importance and the continuing tensions between Washington and Beijing.
The Democratic victory has also brought internal differences within the party into focus, particularly over its policy towards Israel. These divisions could complicate efforts to build a unified position on foreign policy and shape the Trump administration's domestic and international agenda.
With Democrats preparing to exercise greater influence in Congress, the Iran conflict is expected to become a major political and diplomatic issue in Washington in the coming months.
