New Delhi, Sept 2026 : India has achieved a significant milestone in its drive towards self-reliance in defence aviation by mastering the production of the hydraulic booster pump used in the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, reducing dependence on overseas suppliers for a critical component.

The development is expected to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s ability to maintain its frontline fighter fleet and ensure the timely availability of essential spares. The hydraulic booster pump is a complex component of the aircraft’s hydraulic system and requires high levels of precision engineering, reliability and advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Until now, the component was imported, exposing the Su-30MKI fleet to potential supply-chain disruptions and delays in the availability of replacement parts. The indigenous production initiative was undertaken by the Indian Air Force as part of its wider programme to localise critical spares for the fighter fleet.

With the booster pump now being manufactured domestically, technical and maintenance teams are expected to have easier and faster access to the component. This could reduce turnaround times during maintenance and repairs while improving the overall availability of aircraft for operational duties.

The Su-30MKI forms the backbone of the Indian Air Force’s fighter fleet, with more than 270 aircraft in service. Given the size and operational importance of the fleet, securing a reliable domestic supply of critical components is considered essential for sustaining combat readiness.

The hydraulic system performs several vital functions on the aircraft, including controlling flight control surfaces, landing gear and braking systems. The ability to manufacture one of its complex components domestically highlights the growing capabilities of India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.

The development also supports the broader objectives of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence production. India has increasingly moved beyond licensed assembly and maintenance towards the indigenous development and manufacture of sophisticated aircraft systems, components and subsystems.

The localisation of the hydraulic booster pump could also encourage greater cooperation between the Indian Air Force, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and private-sector defence companies. Such collaboration could accelerate efforts to indigenise additional critical components used by frontline aircraft.

Beyond reducing import dependence, domestic production can help lower costs, improve supply-chain resilience and shorten maintenance cycles. It can also contribute to the development of specialised manufacturing expertise within the country.

The achievement is therefore being viewed as another step towards building a more resilient and self-sufficient defence aviation ecosystem, while enhancing India’s strategic autonomy and strengthening the long-term operational sustainability of its Su-30MKI fleet.
