Women’s and men’s teams defeat Kazakhstan and Bhutan respectively; both face South Korea in the medal rounds on September 30
Nagoya, Sept 2026 : India’s compound archery teams continued their strong run at the Asian Games, with both the women’s and men’s squads advancing to the semifinals after impressive quarterfinal victories at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on Sunday.
The women’s trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep defeated Kazakhstan’s Roxana Yunussova, Viktoriya Lyan and Adel Zhexenbinova 233-230 in a closely fought quarterfinal.
India, who finished second in the qualification round, had earlier begun their knockout campaign with a convincing 238-223 victory over Mongolia in the Round of 16. They then held their nerve against Kazakhstan to secure a place in the last four.
The Indian women will face South Korea in the semifinals, with the medal rounds scheduled for September 30.
The men’s compound team also secured a semifinal berth after overcoming Bhutan 235-232. Kushal Dalal, Sahil Jadhav and Ganesh Mani Ratnam were pushed by the Bhutanese trio of Kezang Norbu, Tshetum Gaytshey and Tandin Dorji but held on for a three-point victory.
The Indian men, who finished third in qualification, had earlier defeated the United Arab Emirates 235-215 in the Round of 16. Their quarterfinal win over Bhutan set up a semifinal clash against South Korea.
The compound mixed team event will also carry considerable significance at the Asian Games, with the discipline set to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. One Olympic quota place is available through the Asian Games in the mixed team competition.
Overall, eight quota places for the LA28 Olympics are being contested at the Asian Games. Two quota places each are available in the men’s and women’s individual recurve events, while the recurve mixed team and compound mixed team champions will earn one men’s and one women’s quota place respectively.
India will look to build on its outstanding performance at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games, where its archery contingent produced a record nine-medal haul comprising five gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The compound archers were particularly dominant in Hangzhou, winning all five gold medals available in their discipline. India’s recurve teams added a silver and a bronze to the overall tally.
Elsewhere in the Asian Games, Indian surfers Sugar Shanti Gayen and Kamali Prakash progressed to Round 3 of the women’s shortboard competition after winning their respective heats.
Sugar Shanti scored 7.33 points, with waves rated 3.83 and 3.50, to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Chen Wan-yu, who finished with 5.40 points.
Kamali produced a score of 7.57, built from waves rated 4.17 and 3.40, to overcome Singapore’s Camille Marie Spaccarotella, who managed 4.50.
In the men’s competition, Sivaraj Bau also advanced to Round 3 after defeating Davoud Khadir. Bau accumulated 8.96 points across two waves, joining compatriot Kishore Kumar in the next round.
With both compound archery teams through to the semifinals and three Indian surfers progressing in shortboard events, India continued to make progress across multiple disciplines at the Asian Games.
