Hyderabad, Aug 2026 : India’s reported decision to acquire Russia’s R-37M very-long-range air-to-air missile represents a major step in strengthening the long-range engagement capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The weapon is expected to address a long-standing gap in the reach of India’s fighter fleet, particularly against adversaries equipped with increasingly sophisticated beyond-visual-range missiles.

On July 15, 2026, New Delhi reportedly finalised a contract for around 300 R-37M missiles, also known by NATO as the AA-13 Axehead, in a deal estimated at approximately $1.2 billion. The missiles are expected to be integrated with India’s Su-30MKI fleet, the backbone of the IAF’s fighter force, with deliveries reportedly scheduled within 12 to 18 months.

The acquisition is being viewed as an interim solution while India develops and fields more advanced indigenous long-range air-to-air weapons. However, its introduction could significantly change the tactical equation along the Himalayan frontier and the Line of Control by giving Indian fighters the ability to engage targets at considerably greater distances.

Unlike conventional air-to-air missiles designed primarily for fighter-versus-fighter engagements, the R-37M is particularly suited to attacking high-value airborne platforms. These include airborne early-warning and control aircraft (AEW&C), aerial refuelling tankers, electronic warfare aircraft and other support platforms that enable an opposing air force to conduct sustained combat operations.

By threatening these aircraft from long distances, the missile can potentially force an adversary to move its support platforms farther from the battlefield. This could reduce the effectiveness of enemy fighter aircraft by limiting their access to radar coverage, refuelling and electronic warfare support.

The R-37M achieves its long reach through a high-altitude, lofted flight profile. The missile initially climbs into thinner atmospheric layers before descending rapidly towards its target, conserving energy during much of its flight. Russian sources have claimed a maximum range of up to 400 km under favourable conditions, while estimates for practical employment from the Su-30MKI are generally lower.

Its reported terminal speed of close to Mach 6 further increases the challenge for an opposing aircraft. However, actual engagement ranges depend on factors such as target altitude, speed, manoeuvrability, radar detection, electronic warfare and the launch conditions.

The missile is approximately 4.2 metres long and weighs nearly 600 kg. Its roughly 60-kg fragmentation warhead is designed to inflict significant damage on large airborne platforms. The R-37M is currently most closely associated with Russia’s MiG-31BM interceptor, but integration with the Su-30MKI would provide India with a multirole fighter platform capable of carrying the weapon.

Its guidance system combines several technologies. After launch, the missile can initially rely on inertial navigation and information provided by the launching aircraft. Mid-course updates can be transmitted through a datalink, while an active radar seeker takes over during the terminal phase. This allows the launching fighter to potentially turn away after providing the necessary targeting information rather than remaining committed to the engagement.

The missile has also gained attention from its reported use during Russia’s war in Ukraine. Its long-range employment has contributed to a more restrictive operating environment for Ukrainian combat aircraft, demonstrating the operational value of very-long-range air-to-air missiles.

For India, the timing of the acquisition is significant. The IAF faces an evolving threat environment, with China fielding long-range weapons such as the PL-15 and reportedly developing even longer-range systems. Pakistan also operates aircraft equipped with modern beyond-visual-range missiles. The experience of Operation Sindoor further highlighted the importance of long-range aerial engagement capabilities.

India’s indigenous Astra programme is intended to provide a long-term answer. The Astra Mk-2 and future Mk-3 variants are expected to substantially improve the country’s domestic beyond-visual-range missile capability. Until those systems achieve full operational maturity, the R-37M can provide an immediate enhancement.

For the Su-30MKI, the integration could significantly expand its role. The aircraft already combines long endurance, manoeuvrability and a powerful radar with a substantial weapons load. Adding a very-long-range missile would give Indian pilots another option for shaping the battlespace before conventional fighter engagements occur.

The R-37M therefore represents more than another addition to India’s missile inventory. It offers a rapid response to the changing air-combat environment while India’s indigenous systems mature. In a region where the ability to detect, target and engage an opponent before entering the traditional dogfight is becoming increasingly important, the missile could provide the IAF with a significant new strategic lever.
