The concepts of Shudra, Vaishya, Kshatriya and Brahmin can be understood as four stages of human development, each representing a distinct responsibility, purpose and approach to life.
Shudra: The Stage of Learning and Service
The first stage is associated with the Shudra, a person who engages in detailed observation, learning and the dedicated completion of tasks. Whether a CEO, director, doctor, lawyer, teacher, engineer or research analyst, everyone must first develop the ability to learn, understand and execute responsibilities.
This stage corresponds to the Brahmacharya Ashram, or student life, and the first Purushartha, Dharma—the pursuit of duty and righteousness.
Vaishya: The Stage of Earning and Prosperity
The second stage involves earning a livelihood and managing the responsibilities of worldly life. Like a Vaishya, a person works to provide for the household, achieve financial stability and meet material needs.
This stage reflects the Purushartha of Artha, or material prosperity. It also enables the fulfilment of Kama, which represents desires, enjoyment and fulfilment.
Kshatriya: The Stage of Protection and Responsibility
The third stage is about protecting those who depend on us and fulfilling our obligations towards family and society. A person who accepts responsibility, stands by their dependants and is prepared to safeguard their interests embodies the qualities of a Kshatriya.
This stage highlights courage, commitment and the willingness to shoulder life's challenges.
Brahmin: The Stage of Wisdom and Renunciation
The final stage represents a person who has gained wisdom through experience, fulfilled worldly responsibilities and developed a deeper understanding of life. Such an individual becomes ready to embrace Sannyasa, or renunciation, and pursue spiritual realisation, ultimately seeking unity with Brahman.
According to this perspective, no one becomes a Brahmin, Vaishya or Kshatriya merely by birth. These identities are understood through one's actions, responsibilities, experiences and stage of spiritual development.
The central message is that life is a journey of learning, earning, protecting and ultimately attaining wisdom.
