India’s WTC Hopes Get Major Boost After Galle Test Victory

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : India strengthened their bid to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final with a convincing 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle on Wednesday. Despite the crucial win, the Shubman Gill-led side remained fifth in the latest WTC standings.

India’s percentage of points (PCT) rose from 48.15 to 53.33 after they collected 12 valuable points from the Galle Test. However, the improvement was not enough to move India above fourth-placed Bangladesh, who also strengthened their position after defeating Australia in the first Test of their series in Darwin last week.

Sri Lanka continue to occupy sixth place, but their PCT slipped from 37.50 to 33.33 following the defeat. The result has widened the gap between the two sides and given India an important advantage as the WTC cycle progresses.

Australia remain at the top of the standings with a PCT of 77.78, narrowly ahead of South Africa, who are second with 75.00. New Zealand occupy third place with a PCT of 72.22 from six matches, while Bangladesh are fourth.

England are sixth with 24.36, followed by Pakistan on 22.22 and the West Indies on 20.83.

India’s victory in Galle was built around an outstanding performance from young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar. Playing only his second Test, Suthar delivered a match-winning spell on a slow and turning surface, claiming 6-55 in Sri Lanka’s second innings.

His second-innings figures helped him finish the match with an impressive haul of 10-101, marking his maiden 10-wicket match haul in Test cricket. Suthar’s performance proved decisive as Sri Lanka struggled to withstand India’s spin attack while chasing a mammoth target of 372.

The hosts were eventually dismissed for 206 in 77.4 overs. Sonal Dinusha offered strong resistance with an 84-run knock, while Dhananjaya de Silva contributed 59. However, Suthar repeatedly broke crucial partnerships and eventually wrapped up the innings to seal India’s victory.

India had established control over the match in the first innings, with Devdutt Padikkal producing a magnificent 167. His outstanding contribution helped India post 462 and secure a substantial 178-run lead.

The visitors then maintained their attacking approach in the second innings, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant contributing a crucial 66. India were dismissed for 193 but had already built enough of a lead to set Sri Lanka the challenging target.

The victory assumes added significance for India because of their inconsistent start to the current WTC cycle. The Gill-led team have already suffered four defeats in their 10 matches, making every remaining Test increasingly important in their pursuit of a place in the championship final.

With seven Tests still remaining in their campaign, India have little margin for error. The team will now have an immediate opportunity to further improve its position when it takes on Sri Lanka in the second and final Test of the series in Colombo from August 23.

After completing the Sri Lanka assignment, India are scheduled to travel to New Zealand for a two-Test series in November. Their WTC campaign will then conclude with a challenging five-Test home series against Australia next year.

The Galle victory has therefore provided India with both momentum and valuable championship points. Another strong result in Colombo could significantly improve their position and keep their qualification hopes firmly alive.
