Tehran, Sept 2026 : Iran has ruled out negotiations with the United States unless Tehran’s specific conditions are met, as tensions between the two countries remain high amid growing uncertainty over regional diplomacy and developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, made the remarks early Tuesday in a post on social media platform X, responding to comments by US President Donald Trump.
Trump had said on Monday that Iran wanted to reach an agreement “quickly and badly” and suggested that Washington remained open to renewed discussions.
“The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly. I will determine whether or not the USA will choose to engage,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that the US was open to the possibility of talks.
Rezaei rejected what he described as mixed signals from Washington and warned against interpreting the US remarks as an immediate diplomatic opening.
He said Iran would not enter negotiations until its conditions were fulfilled, while also pointing to the strategic importance of oil and regional waterways.
The latest exchange comes against the backdrop of an earlier understanding between Tehran and Washington. According to reports by Xinhua news agency, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 aimed at ending the conflict in the region across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
Under the understanding, the two sides were expected to hold negotiations within 60 days to work towards a final agreement. The deadline expired on August 17, but the future of the proposed talks remains uncertain following subsequent escalations and tensions in the region.
The diplomatic standoff has coincided with a series of incidents in waters near Iran. Two fishing boats were reportedly targeted in a drone attack off Iran’s southern coast on Monday night, leaving several fishermen missing.
Ahmad Nafisi, deputy governor of Hormozgan province, said the incident took place off the port city of Kargan, near Larak Island. Search and rescue operations were launched following the attack, with authorities attempting to locate the missing fishermen.
In another incident, the Navy of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said a super oil tanker named EL GAIA exploded and caught fire after reportedly striking naval mines while attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz using what Iranian authorities described as a “forbidden” route.
According to Sepah News, efforts to contain the fire were unsuccessful and the blaze eventually engulfed the vessel. The IRGC said warnings had previously been issued about the route and maintained that the Strait of Hormuz remained closed and under Iranian naval control.
The developments add to concerns over maritime security and regional stability, while the latest statements from Tehran indicate that any immediate resumption of US-Iran negotiations could face significant hurdles.
