Tehran, July 2026: Iran has called on the European Union to take what it described as “decisive action” against Ukraine following an alleged attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, further raising tensions amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to a statement issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi made the demand during a telephone conversation with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on Saturday. The two leaders also discussed recent developments in the region, including growing security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, and stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
During the conversation, Araghchi strongly condemned the reported attack, describing it as a violation of international law. He urged the European Union, the United Nations Security Council, and the wider international community to hold those responsible, along with their alleged supporters, accountable.
In a separate development, Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine’s Charge d’Affaires in Tehran on Saturday and formally handed over a diplomatic note protesting what it described as a “hostile and criminal” act. The ministry maintained that Iran has not been a party to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and warned that such actions could further intensify regional instability and expand the scope of the war.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces had successfully struck a Russian warship and other vessels allegedly being used to transport Iran-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea. Ukraine has maintained that the operation targeted assets supporting Russia’s military capabilities.
Responding to Zelensky’s statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reiterated that the attack violated the United Nations Charter and constituted what it called an “act of aggression.” It insisted that Iran has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and accused Kyiv of taking actions that could dangerously escalate the security situation in the region.
The ministry further warned that Iran would take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests and security. It said Tehran would not hesitate to defend itself against any threats and held Ukraine responsible for the consequences of what it described as its “adventurism.”
The latest diplomatic exchange adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile geopolitical environment, with concerns growing that the conflict could increasingly spill beyond its current boundaries and draw additional regional actors into the crisis.
