Olympic bronze medallist defeats South Korea’s Seong Suyeon 5-0 in women’s 75kg quarterfinal to secure her second consecutive Asiad medal
Nishio, Sept 2026 : India’s star boxer Lovlina Borgohain secured a medal at the Asian Games on Monday with a commanding 5-0 victory over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the women’s 75kg quarterfinal at the Nishio Gymnasium. The win took the Olympic bronze medallist into the semifinals and assured her of a second consecutive Asian Games medal.
Borgohain, who won silver in the 75kg category at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, produced a composed performance in her opening bout of the competition. She maintained her distance effectively, used her reach to land clean punches and controlled the contest across all three rounds.
Both boxers began cautiously, adopting defensive approaches in the opening exchanges. Borgohain, however, soon found her rhythm and connected with several precise punches to establish an early advantage. Her ability to counter effectively and make use of her reach helped her take the first round on all five judges’ scorecards.
The Indian continued with the same strategy in the second round, mixing jabs with well-timed counter-punches. Seong struggled to close the distance and impose her style as Borgohain remained mobile and picked her opportunities carefully.
With the contest firmly under her control, Borgohain increased the pressure in the final round. She moved forward with greater intent and landed several strong combinations, leaving the Korean boxer with little opportunity to change the course of the bout.
All five judges ultimately scored the contest 30-27 in Borgohain’s favour, completing a comprehensive unanimous-decision victory. The result also extended India’s strong run in the boxing competition at the ongoing Games.
Borgohain’s medal is part of a growing haul of confirmed boxing medals for India at the continental event. Narender Berwal had earlier booked his place in the men’s 90kg semifinals after defeating Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep in the quarterfinals.
Ankush Panghal also secured a medal for India in the men’s 80kg category. The reigning Commonwealth Games champion defeated Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in his quarterfinal to advance to the last four.
Parveen Hooda added another medal in the women’s 65kg category after registering a 5-0 unanimous-decision win over Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova. Parveen dictated the pace through a measured approach, using her speed and reach to keep her opponent at distance.
The Indian boxer repeatedly connected with quick combinations and counter-attacks, while Khamidova, a 2025 World Championships silver medallist, struggled to find openings. All five judges awarded the bout to Parveen.
For Borgohain, the semifinal berth provides another opportunity to improve on her silver-medal performance from Hangzhou. The 28-year-old, who is also a former world champion, entered the Aichi-Nagoya Games seeking to add another major international medal to her career.
Her assured medal further strengthens India’s presence in the boxing competition and keeps alive the country’s hopes of adding more podium finishes as the Games progress.
