Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar Flyover Inaugurated
Nagpur, Sept 2026 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said efforts are underway to give Nagpur the character of a well-planned city through extensive infrastructure development. He said large-scale projects are also being undertaken keeping in mind the city’s future expansion.
The Indora-Dighori flyover, which is expected to provide a new direction to the city’s traffic management and strengthen connectivity between North, Central and South Nagpur, was inaugurated digitally by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The flyover has been named the Dr Keshav Baliram Pant Hedgewar Flyover.
Revenue Minister and Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Mayor Neeta Thakre, Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed, MLAs Pravin Datke, Mohan Mate, Krishna Khopde and Sanjay Bhende, former MP Dr Vikas Mahatme, former MP Gev Avari, former Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari and several other dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony held at Kavi Suresh Bhat Auditorium.
The flyover was constructed as part of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s vision and was completed in a record time. Expressing confidence that it would help address traffic problems across a large part of the city, Chief Minister Fadnavis described the structure as an excellent example of engineering.
He said naming the flyover after Dr Keshav Baliram Pant Hedgewar, the first Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), on the occasion of the organisation’s centenary was an important step that would also help preserve an aspect of Nagpur’s identity.
Fadnavis said Nagpur currently has 35 flyovers, while another 15 have been proposed. He said an environment-friendly modern project to generate energy from waste is also being developed in the city.
The Chief Minister said the construction of cement-concrete roads had significantly addressed the problem of potholes. He added that after completion of the Outer Ring Road, another ring road would be developed in view of the city’s future expansion.
Plans are also underway to develop a new, employment-oriented Nagpur across around 2,000 acres, he said. Nagpur is being envisioned as a modern city of international standards, and efforts are being made to develop it as a sustainable city, Fadnavis added.
Nagpur’s Best Flyover: Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari described the new flyover as the best in Nagpur and said advanced international technology had been used in its construction.
He said the flyover would substantially ease traffic congestion and significantly reduce both travel distance and commuting time. Gadkari added that several large-scale infrastructure projects would continue to be implemented in Nagpur in the coming years.
He also outlined some of the projects planned for the city in the future.
Large-Scale Development Projects Planned: Chandrashekhar Bawankule
Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said two major development projects would be undertaken in every Assembly constituency of Nagpur in the coming years.
He added that a provision of Rs 1,000 crore would be made available for the city in the future. Bawankule also said that the development plan for Deekshabhoomi had been approved.
The programme began with a patriotic musical performance. During the event, Chief Minister Fadnavis and Union Minister Gadkari presented certificates of appreciation to officials of the company associated with the flyover and the highway authority.
About the Flyover
The 8.90-km Indora-Dighori flyover, constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 998 crore, has been built using advanced technology.
The flyover is expected to reduce traffic congestion in several parts of the city and facilitate faster movement of vehicles. Ramps have been provided at several locations along the route, which will improve traffic flow and enhance road connectivity.
At Ashok Chowk along the flyover route, 22 murals based on the original copy of the Constitution of India have also been installed.
