Vatican City, Oct 2026 : Pope Leo XIV continues to make steady progress in his postoperative recovery, with blood tests and a chest X-ray confirming an improvement in his overall condition, the Holy See Press Office said on Friday.

On his fourth day at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the 70-year-old pontiff underwent routine medical examinations that confirmed his continued recovery. His doctors, Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, said his condition was improving steadily.

“Respiratory physiotherapy sessions have continued,” the doctors said, adding that his postoperative recovery had progressed to the point where he could carry out normal daily activities entirely independently.

The Vatican also announced that Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon in a room set up on the hospital’s 10th floor. He distributed Communion during the service, which was attended by several members of the hospital’s medical and nursing staff, as well as personnel from the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps.

During his homily, the Pope thanked doctors, nurses and other hospital staff for their daily work caring for patients in vulnerable conditions. He also expressed particular gratitude for the care they had provided to him during his hospital stay.

The Holy See Press Office further confirmed that the Sunday noon Angelus, normally led by the Pope, would take place.

Separately, Pope Leo XIV met on Friday afternoon with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and Dean of the College of Cardinals, and Cardinal Baldo Reina, Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome.

The latest update indicates continued progress in the pontiff’s recovery, with medical monitoring and respiratory physiotherapy remaining part of his postoperative care.
