Nagoya, September 2026 : India’s Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza’s impressive campaign at the Asian Games 2026 came to an end in the women’s singles semifinals after she suffered a 1-2 defeat against Indonesia’s Ima Sumaya at the Nagoya City Higashi Sports Center on Saturday.
Making her Asian Games debut, the 24-year-old Indian began the semifinal confidently, winning the opening set 12-7. Sumaya responded strongly in the second set, overcoming an early deficit to take control and level the contest at 12-9.
The Indonesian carried that momentum into the decider. Quimcy initially took the initiative, racing to a 3-0 lead and then extending her advantage to 4-1. Sumaya, however, staged a strong comeback and turned the contest in her favour before closing out the third set 12-7 to secure her place in the final.
Despite the semifinal defeat, Quimcy remains in contention for a historic medal. She will face Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto, ranked World No. 7, in the bronze medal match on Sunday. A victory would give India its first-ever Teqball medal at the Asian Games.
Quimcy had earlier advanced to the semifinals after topping Group A with two victories in her debut appearance at the continental event.
She opened her campaign with a notable 2-1 victory over Japan’s top-seeded Sakamoto. After losing the opening set 10-12, the Indian fought back to win the second 12-11 before producing another close finish in the decider, which she won 13-11.
Quimcy then maintained her momentum in her second group match against Cambodia’s Koemyean DY. She registered a comfortable 12-9, 12-7 victory in straight sets to finish at the top of Group A. Her group-topping finish earned her direct entry into the semifinals, allowing her to bypass the quarterfinal stage.
Apart from women’s singles, Quimcy has also represented India in the mixed doubles competition alongside Mohamed Anas Imran Beg. The Indian duo began their Group A campaign with a victory over the Philippines’ Jhoana Abulencia and Prince Agustin.
Teqball, a sport invented in Hungary, combines elements of football with a curved table and incorporates skills associated with freestyle football and sepak takraw. It has been included in the Asian Games programme for the first time at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 edition.
The sport features five medal events at the Games — men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
For Quimcy, Sunday’s bronze medal match now offers an opportunity to cap her Asian Games debut with a historic achievement. A win against Sakamoto would not only secure India’s first Teqball medal at the continental Games but also mark a significant milestone for the sport’s growing presence in the country.
