New Delhi, August 2026: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to inaugurate the much-awaited T-72 tank overhaul project at the Vehicle Factory in Jabalpur, marking an important step towards extending the service life of one of the Indian Army’s key armoured platforms.
The project is aimed at modernising and overhauling the Army’s ageing T-72 fleet while ensuring that the tanks remain operationally effective and combat-ready for years to come. The initiative also underlines the government’s emphasis on strengthening indigenous defence production, maintenance and modernisation capabilities.
Singh will perform the groundbreaking ceremony at the Vehicle Factory in Jabalpur. His visit is expected to highlight the growing importance of the city as a centre for defence equipment maintenance, overhaul and modernisation.
The T-72 has formed the backbone of India’s armoured formations for decades. With a large number of these tanks continuing to serve with the Army, systematic overhauls are considered essential to maintain their reliability, operational availability and battlefield effectiveness.
The project at the Vehicle Factory is also significant from the perspective of India’s broader push for self-reliance in defence. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will receive Defence Minister Singh at Dumna Airport and accompany him during his visit. The participation of the Chief Minister reflects the importance attached to the project at both the state and national levels.
Following the ceremony, Singh is scheduled to travel to South Civil Lines, where he will meet party leaders. He is expected to leave Jabalpur for New Delhi from Dumna Airport at around 3:20 p.m.
Focus on Youth and Sports
Ahead of the Defence Minister’s arrival, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will participate in the ‘My Bharat Yuva Connect-Khelo India Samvad’ programme at Government Mahakoshal Arts and Commerce College in Jabalpur.
The programme is being organised as part of National Sports Day and will virtually connect Prime Minister Narendra Modi with more than eight lakh young people from around 1,600 educational institutions across the country.
Young participants in Jabalpur will have the opportunity to listen to the Prime Minister’s live address, which is expected to focus on sports development, sporting infrastructure and India’s expanding sports ecosystem.
The programme is aimed at strengthening youth participation in sports and encouraging young Indians to take greater interest in physical fitness and sporting activities. It also reflects the government's broader focus on developing sporting talent and creating an ecosystem capable of supporting athletes at different levels.
The simultaneous focus on defence modernisation and youth engagement gives Singh’s Jabalpur visit significance beyond the T-72 overhaul project. While the defence initiative is intended to strengthen the Army’s armoured capabilities and preserve the operational readiness of its existing fleet, the sports programme places emphasis on developing the country’s younger generation.
