RG Kar Case: Victim’s Father Threatens Fresh Protest After Supreme Court Grants Bail to Sandip Ghosh

Kolkata, Oct 2026 : The father of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024 has threatened to launch a fresh movement in West Bengal following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh in a financial irregularities case.

The Supreme Court’s division bench, comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Prasanna B. Varale, granted bail to Ghosh on Friday, citing his prolonged incarceration and the slow progress of the trial.

Reacting to the development, the victim’s father, Sekhar Debnath, said he would continue pursuing justice for his daughter and would not hesitate to take to the streets again if necessary.

“I will see it through to the end. Even if necessary, I will call for a fresh movement in the state on this issue and hit the streets,” Debnath told media persons on Saturday.

Asked whether another agitation would amount to a protest against the BJP-led state government, particularly since his wife, Ratna Debnath, is a legislator from the ruling party, he said political considerations would not affect his determination to seek justice.

“It really does not matter that she is a part of the ruling dispensation. I will do whatever is necessary for justice,” he said.

Ghosh, who headed the state-run medical institution during the previous Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee, came under scrutiny after allegations of large-scale financial irregularities at the hospital emerged following the junior doctor’s rape and murder in August 2024.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Ghosh in connection with the alleged corruption at the institution. The victim’s parents had also raised concerns that influential individuals were involved in their daughter’s death.

Ghosh had approached the Supreme Court after the Calcutta High Court rejected his bail plea. While considering his appeal, the apex court took note of the time he had spent in custody and the pace of the legal proceedings.

According to the details cited during the proceedings, Ghosh had remained in custody for more than two years, while statements had been recorded from only a small proportion of the 147 witnesses listed in the case.

The bench considered the prolonged incarceration and slow progress of the trial while granting him bail.

The decision has renewed tensions surrounding the high-profile case, with the victim’s father signalling that he could organise another round of protests in West Bengal. He has maintained that he will continue his efforts to secure justice, irrespective of the political circumstances.
