Russia Unveils New Su-57-Compatible Stand-Off Weapons at Egypt Air Show

Sept 2026 : Russia has unveiled a new generation of air-launched stand-off weapons designed for the Su-57 fighter family at the El Alamein International Air Show in Egypt, showcasing systems aimed at providing relatively low-cost alternatives to expensive Western cruise missiles. The weapons on display included the S-71M Monokhrom, S-71K Kovyor and S8000 Banderol, reflecting Moscow’s growing emphasis on affordable, stealth-oriented weapons that can be produced and deployed in large numbers.

The systems were showcased from September 8 to 10, 2026, as part of Russia’s wider defence-export campaign in Egypt. Developed by Russian defence companies, the weapons are intended to occupy a space between costly cruise and ballistic missiles and cheaper armed drones. Their designs emphasise reduced detectability, relatively simple construction and compatibility with multiple launch platforms.

S-71M Monokhrom

The S-71M Monokhrom is described as a hybrid between a cruise missile and a loitering munition. The weapon features a trapezoidal fuselage, folding swept wings and a V-shaped tail. It is powered by a modernised TRDD-50 turbofan engine and can reportedly carry warheads weighing up to 250 kg, including fragmentation and penetrating variants.

The weapon has an estimated range of around 350 km, potentially increasing to 400 km when fitted with a lighter payload. Its reported cruising speed of approximately 500–600 km/h is complemented by a low-altitude flight profile. Over land, it can reportedly operate at altitudes of 20–75 metres, while over water it can fly as low as 5–15 metres, potentially making detection more difficult for ground-based radar systems.

One of the weapon’s notable features is its reported autonomous target-search and recognition capability. Rather than relying exclusively on pre-programmed coordinates, the system is claimed to be capable of identifying targets independently.

The Monokhrom can reportedly be carried internally by the Su-57 and the S-70 Okhotnik unmanned combat aircraft, while also being capable of external carriage on aircraft pylons.

S-71K Kovyor

The S-71K Kovyor represents another low-cost strike option and has reportedly been used in the Ukraine conflict since late 2025. Fragments recovered by Ukrainian forces have provided information about its construction and components.

The air-launched cruise missile features an asymmetric configuration, a trapezoidal nose, a chin-mounted optical sensor, swept wings and inverted V-shaped tails. It is powered by an R500 turbojet engine, has a reported range of 300–350 km and carries a 250-kg OFAB-250-270 warhead.

The Kovyor reportedly uses inertial navigation and does not feature an advanced terminal seeker. This makes it more suitable for engaging fixed or pre-designated targets than rapidly moving targets.

Analysis of recovered components has reportedly identified electronic parts originating from countries including the United States, China, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Taiwan and Ireland. The presence of foreign-sourced components highlights potential vulnerabilities in Russia’s weapons supply chain and the continuing impact of international sanctions.

The system’s relatively low cost could allow Russia to employ it in larger numbers, while reserving more sophisticated and expensive weapons such as the Kh-101 for higher-value targets.

S8000 Banderol

The S8000 Banderol is another cruise missile and loitering-munition hybrid. It reportedly has a range of approximately 500 km and carries a warhead weighing between 114 kg and 150 kg.

Developed by Kronstadt, the weapon has been associated with the Orion unmanned aerial vehicle but can reportedly also be launched from helicopters, including the Mi-28. This gives rotary-wing platforms an extended stand-off strike capability.

With a reported speed of 500–650 km/h, the Banderol is designed as an attrition-oriented weapon that can support sustained long-range attacks without requiring the deployment of Russia’s most sophisticated missile systems.

A fourth, unidentified munition was also displayed at the air show. Defence analysts believe it could be another relatively inexpensive weapon compatible with the Su-57, potentially a small cruise missile equipped with electro-optical guidance and intended for massed attacks.

The unveiling forms part of Russia’s broader effort to promote its aerospace and defence products to prospective customers in Africa and the Middle East. Rosoboronexport displayed the Su-57E alongside drones, loitering munitions and counter-UAV systems, presenting the aircraft as more than an air-superiority platform and highlighting its potential as a multirole strike system.

The new weapons also illustrate how Russia is adapting its missile strategy to battlefield demands and sanctions-related production constraints. By emphasising comparatively inexpensive designs and the use of commercially available components, Moscow appears to be seeking weapons that can be manufactured and deployed in significant quantities.

However, the limitations of these systems remain significant. Less sophisticated terminal guidance and seekers can reduce their effectiveness against mobile or heavily defended targets. Their principal value may therefore lie in saturation attacks, where large numbers of relatively inexpensive weapons are used to stretch and overwhelm air-defence networks rather than relying exclusively on a small number of highly advanced missiles.
