Mohali, September 2026: India captain Shubman Gill made a memorable first appearance of the season in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League, smashing a quickfire 40 before Fazilka Falcons held their nerve to defeat Arshdeep Singh-led Ludhiana Lions by just one run in a thrilling Match 15.
Gill’s arrival had generated considerable excitement, and the Indian opener wasted no time in entertaining the crowd. Opening the innings for Fazilka, he produced an aggressive 21-ball knock featuring seven boundaries and a six. His blistering start gave the Falcons early momentum and set the platform for a competitive total.
The contest featured two prominent Indian cricketers, with Ludhiana skipper and India pacer Arshdeep Singh leading his side. After winning the toss, Arshdeep opted to bowl first, but Gill immediately put the Lions’ attack under pressure with a series of attacking strokes.
Ludhiana, however, responded strongly through Kartik Chadha, who emerged as the standout bowler of the innings. Chadha broke the Falcons’ momentum by dismissing Gill and went on to complete an impressive four-over spell, finishing with figures of 4/9.
Despite Gill’s departure and Chadha’s outstanding spell, Fazilka managed to recover through useful contributions from Prerit Dutta and Jaiveer Bhinder Singh. Dutta scored 36 from 23 deliveries, while Bhinder Singh added 21 off 18 balls as the Falcons pushed their total to 170/9 in 20 overs.
The Lions began their chase of 171 cautiously but found themselves under increasing pressure as Fazilka’s bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals. Opener Karteek Sharma attempted to anchor the innings, scoring a patient 32 from 29 balls, but Ludhiana struggled to maintain the required scoring rate while losing wickets at crucial moments.
With the chase seemingly slipping away, Krish Bhagat and Madhav Pathania changed the complexion of the match with a spectacular late assault. The duo attacked the Falcons’ bowlers and produced an unbeaten 61-run partnership from only 29 deliveries, bringing Ludhiana back into contention.
Pathania led the charge, remaining unbeaten on a blistering 37 from just 16 balls. Bhagat provided valuable support with an unbeaten 28 off 23 deliveries. Their partnership dramatically reduced the deficit and ensured the Falcons had to defend a narrow margin in the final over.
Ludhiana required 19 runs from the last six deliveries to complete what would have been a remarkable comeback. The Lions continued to fight until the final ball, keeping the contest alive with a series of boundaries.
With six runs needed from the final delivery, Pathania managed only a boundary, leaving Ludhiana one run short of the target. Fazilka Falcons consequently secured a dramatic victory after successfully defending their total.
The result capped an exciting contest in which momentum shifted repeatedly between the two teams. Fazilka’s early batting charge, followed by Ludhiana’s late resurgence, ensured a tense finish.
Gill was named Player of the Match for his explosive contribution at the top of the order and the immediate impact of his first appearance of the season for the Falcons.
