Ensuring Justice, Respect, and Support for the 1984 Victim Families is the Resolve of the Delhi Government: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta
Process of Providing Government Jobs to Eligible Victim Families by the Delhi Government is Underway: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta
New Delhi, November 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta participated in the ‘Samvaad – With the Victim Families of the 1984 Anti-Sikh Pogrom’ programme held at the residence of Union Minister Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. On this occasion, she interacted with members of the victim families, listening to their anguish, struggles, and sentiments associated with their long wait for justice. She stated that recalling the events of 1984 remains deeply painful to this day. The profound suffering endured by the victim families through years of difficult circumstances cannot be expressed in words.
The Chief Minister noted that even on the joyous occasion of festivals like Diwali, the pain of losing their loved ones surges within these families. She remarked that what transpired in 1984 cannot be appropriately termed as mere riots. It was not a conflict between two groups, but rather a one-sided attack on innocent and defenseless people. She added that the accounts narrated by the victim families are extremely heart-wrenching.
The Chief Minister stated that under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, significant efforts have been made towards delivering justice to the 1984 victim families. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted by the Prime Minister, which facilitated the reinvestigation of cases where action had previously stalled. The Chief Minister emphasized that ensuring justice for the victim families is not merely an administrative duty, but our moral responsibility towards them. She shared that the Delhi Government has continuously strived to improve the lives of victim families and provide them with economic and social support. Over the past one and a half years, 150 members of victim families have been provided with government jobs. Furthermore, necessary amendments have been made to rules to simplify the appointment process.
The Chief Minister informed that relaxations have been provided in educational criteria for appointments, and the upper age limit has also been relaxed. Now, the higher age of an eligible family member or non-fulfillment of prescribed educational qualifications will not act as a barrier to employment. Families can nominate the member they deem most appropriate for the job based on their circumstances. She assured that appointments are being continually granted to families whose documents and cases are clear, and efforts will be made to issue appointment letters to the remaining eligible families at the earliest.
The Chief Minister observed that those lost by these families cannot be brought back. However, the government can make every possible effort to ease their lives, provide them with support, and secure a better future. She affirmed that the Delhi Government’s objective is to ensure that all victim families within Delhi's jurisdiction receive necessary assistance and that no eligible family is left out of this process. Reassuring all the victim families, the Chief Minister stated that the Delhi Government is fully committed to their support, dignity, and justice. She added that the government will continue its endeavors to provide essential assistance to eligible families and successfully fulfill the initiatives underway to improve their lives.
