Chennai, Oct 2026 : The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has issued an order granting administrative and financial approval for the “Annan Seer” scheme, under which eligible women will receive an eight-gram, 22-carat gold coin and a silk saree at the time of their marriage.
The initiative was announced in the Revised Budget Estimates for 2026-27 and is being positioned as a symbolic marriage-assistance programme aimed at supporting brides across the state. The government has allocated Rs 812 crore for implementing the welfare scheme.
Under the programme, every eligible woman will receive an eight-gram gold coin, equivalent to one sovereign, along with a quality silk saree to be used during wedding ceremonies.
The scheme was announced during the Budget presentation on August 5. Finance Minister Marie Wilson said the initiative draws inspiration from a traditional Tamil custom in which a brother presents gifts to his sister on the occasion of her marriage.
According to the government, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay views the women of Tamil Nadu as members of his extended family and has sought to extend wedding assistance in the spirit of a brother’s contribution to an important milestone in a woman’s life.
The government said the scheme combines cultural symbolism with a welfare measure by providing two traditional and valuable items associated with marriage ceremonies.
The Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department has been designated as the nodal department responsible for implementing the programme across Tamil Nadu.
The department is also working on arrangements to facilitate online applications for eligible beneficiaries. The digital application process is expected to make it easier for women meeting the prescribed eligibility criteria to register for the benefit.
The state government has described “Annan Seer” as one of the flagship welfare initiatives of the new administration. The programme seeks to provide direct assistance to women while drawing on the cultural significance of the relationship between brothers and sisters in Tamil society.
The Rs 812-crore allocation will support the distribution of gold coins and silk sarees to beneficiaries under the scheme. The government is expected to issue further details on eligibility requirements, application procedures and implementation guidelines as arrangements for the programme are finalised.
The initiative is being presented by the Tamil Nadu government as a combination of welfare support and cultural tradition, with the state extending wedding gifts to eligible women as part of its broader social welfare agenda.
