New York, Aug 2026 : US President Donald Trump has indicated that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent visit to Moscow was linked to Washington’s efforts to bring an end to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, lifting some of the secrecy surrounding the high-level intelligence trip.
Speaking to conservative commentator Glenn Beck, Trump said his administration was working extensively to end the war and suggested that both Russia and Ukraine were interested in seeing the conflict conclude.
“We’re working very hard to get that war ended, and frankly, they both want to see it ended at this point,” Trump said, adding that something could emerge from Ratcliffe’s visit but cautioning against attaching excessive importance to the trip.
When asked whether Ratcliffe’s Moscow visit was connected to NATO or threatened US sanctions linked to Iran, Trump dismissed both possibilities.
“None of the above. He’s there, you know, very sort of semi-routine. I hate to disappoint people,” Trump said, without providing further details about the purpose or outcome of the visit.
The trip had initially been kept confidential by the US government and came to light after American media outlets tracked flight data showing an American military aircraft travelling from the United States through Latvia to Moscow. Diplomatic motorcades were subsequently observed in the Russian capital.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later confirmed Ratcliffe’s presence in Moscow. However, he said the CIA director did not meet Putin during the visit and instead held discussions with Russian intelligence officials.
Peskov declined to disclose details of the talks, saying only that contacts had taken place through the two countries’ security services.
“All I can tell you is that there have been contacts via the security services,” Peskov told reporters.
Ratcliffe’s visit comes at a particularly sensitive moment in the Ukraine conflict, which has entered another phase of heightened military activity. Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine, including strikes that have reportedly hit civilian areas, while Kyiv faces continued pressure on its air defence capabilities.
Reports have indicated that Ukraine is experiencing shortages of anti-missile defence equipment, potentially leaving cities and critical infrastructure more vulnerable to Russian attacks.
Trump had repeatedly promised during his presidential campaign that he would end the Ukraine war rapidly after returning to office. However, the conflict has continued for years, with diplomatic efforts failing to produce a lasting settlement so far.
The timing of Ratcliffe’s Moscow visit has also drawn attention because of Washington’s growing pressure on Iran. Shortly before the trip, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned countries and businesses maintaining commercial ties with Iran that they could face serious consequences.
Trump has separately threatened what he described as an “Economic D-Day” against Iran, signalling the possibility of intensified economic pressure. Russia maintains close relations with Tehran, adding another layer of complexity to US-Russia interactions.
There have also been reports that Russia has provided intelligence assistance to Iran amid its confrontation with the United States. Trump, however, has rejected such claims.
Despite confirming the CIA chief’s visit, the Kremlin sought to play down its significance. Peskov stressed that communication between intelligence and security agencies can continue even during periods of severe tension between Washington and Moscow.
“These contacts often continue even during the most difficult periods in bilateral relations,” Peskov said.
He cautioned against drawing immediate conclusions about the broader implications of the meeting, saying it was too early to determine whether the contacts would help improve relations between the two countries.
“It is still too early to say to what extent this will, overall, help to steer our bilateral relations out of the profound crisis in which they currently find themselves,” Peskov added.
The Moscow trip marks Ratcliffe’s first known visit to Russia since taking over as CIA director. While neither side has disclosed substantive details of the discussions, Trump’s comments indicate that the Ukraine conflict remains a key issue in the administration’s engagement with Moscow.
