Washington, September 2026: US President Donald Trump has declined to endorse Vice President JD Vance for the 2028 presidential race, saying it is “too early” to make a decision, while praising Vance and other potential contenders within the Republican Party.
Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One in Shannon, Ireland. Asked whether he was prepared to support Vance for the 2028 presidential nomination, Trump said, “Well, it's too early. I mean, it's too early. I think he's terrific. We've got so many terrific people. We have, as they call it, a very deep bench.”
When pressed on who could emerge as the strongest challenger to Vance, Trump remained non-committal.
“You know, I just think they're all very good, and JD’s fantastic, and he did a very good job,” he said.
Trump’s comments come amid growing speculation within Republican circles over who could succeed him as the party’s presidential standard-bearer in 2028. Although the next presidential election is still more than two years away, potential contenders and their supporters have increasingly begun positioning themselves for the future.
In August, The Washington Post reported that Trump had spoken more directly about Vance’s prospects during a private meeting with donors at the Oval Office. According to people familiar with the discussion, Trump told attendees, “At the end of the day, we need to elect JD.”
Those remarks were viewed as a strong indication that Trump could eventually support Vance. However, advisers reportedly cautioned that the president had not made a final decision about his preferred successor and was still weighing Vance against Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump has reportedly discussed the relative strengths of the two Republicans with aides and associates on several occasions. Internal conversations have included Trump asking questions about Vance and Rubio and informally seeking opinions from staff members during travel aboard Marine One.
A key adviser said in August that Trump had privately concluded Vance would eventually inherit the MAGA movement. However, other Republican insiders have warned against treating that assessment as a settled decision, noting that Trump frequently considers multiple viewpoints before making political choices.
The outcome of the upcoming congressional midterm elections in November could also influence the Republican Party’s internal dynamics and the eventual 2028 field.
Meanwhile, Vance has maintained a cautious approach to the presidential question. He has indicated that any serious decision about a potential 2028 campaign would come after the midterm elections.
Rubio, meanwhile, has largely avoided publicly discussing his presidential ambitions. His allies, however, maintain that Trump continues to have a high regard for both Vance and Rubio.
As Republican donors, activists and party insiders increasingly align themselves with different potential candidates, the early contest for the party’s future leadership is beginning to take shape.
