Washington, September 2026 : US President Donald Trump has unveiled an expansive Republican agenda for the November midterm elections, calling on voters to retain his party’s control of Congress and promising sweeping changes to healthcare, taxation, immigration and election laws.
Addressing a Republican convention in Dallas, Trump urged supporters to treat the congressional elections as though he himself were on the ballot, underscoring the importance he places on the contest.
“You've got to pretend I'm on the ticket,” Trump said, describing the elections as among the most important in the country.
Trump said a Republican victory would enable his administration to overhaul federal healthcare payments. He proposed ending payments to major health insurance companies and instead directing the money to individuals, who could then use it to purchase healthcare coverage.
“We will end all payments to big health insurance companies and give you the money directly,” Trump said, arguing that the approach would allow Americans to retain some of the money for themselves.
On the economy, Trump pledged to make his administration’s tax cuts permanent. He accused Democrats of seeking to reverse his economic policies and increase taxes if they regain control of Congress.
“We're going to take those beautiful tax cuts. We're going to make them permanent,” Trump said.
The President also renewed his push for what he described as “most favored nation prescription drug discounts”, saying Republicans would seek to make the policy permanent through legislation.
Trump claimed his administration had achieved the largest recorded reduction in prescription drug prices, with some medicines becoming 50 per cent to 90 per cent cheaper. However, he did not provide supporting figures for those claims during the address.
On immigration and border security, Trump called for Congress to pass the proposed “No Invasion of Our Country Act”, although he gave few details about the legislation. “We don't want any more invasions of our country,” he said.
He also urged lawmakers to approve the “Save America Act”, which he said would introduce voter identification requirements and require proof of citizenship.
Trump further called for an end to no-cash-bail policies and tougher action against fraud. He claimed his administration had already identified billions of dollars associated with fraudulent activities and suggested the eventual figure could exceed $1 trillion.
Repeatedly urging Republicans to vote on or before November 3, Trump warned that Democrats would seek to dismantle his administration’s policies if they regained control of Congress.
The midterm elections will determine which party controls the US House of Representatives and Senate for the remaining two years of Trump’s current term, making the contest a crucial test of his political agenda and Republican strength in Washington.
