PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister, Completes 12 Years in Office

New Delhi, June 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office and surpassing the record set by the country’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

The landmark achievement comes as Prime Minister Modi completes 12 years at the helm of the Central government, a period marked by major political victories, economic reforms, infrastructure expansion and a series of ambitious nation-building initiatives.

According to official calculations, Nehru’s tenure from 1952 onward is considered for comparison because he headed an interim government between 1947 and 1952 before India conducted its first general elections. By crossing the 4,399-day mark as an elected Prime Minister, Modi has now established a new record in India’s democratic history.

Although former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi spent more than 14 years in office, her tenure was interrupted by electoral defeat and a period out of power. As a result, Modi now holds the distinction of being the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister of independent India.

Prime Minister Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a decisive victory in the Lok Sabha elections. He secured a second consecutive mandate in 2019 and went on to achieve a historic third straight term in 2024, reinforcing his position as one of the most influential leaders in contemporary Indian politics.

Over the past 12 years, the Modi government has overseen several landmark projects that have reshaped India’s infrastructure and development landscape. These include the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, the transformation of Rajpath into Kartavya Path, the expansion of the Vande Bharat train network, the construction of the Statue of Unity, the commissioning of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, progress on the Kashmir rail link, the development of Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.

To mark the completion of 12 years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and celebrate Prime Minister Modi’s historic achievement, the NDA is holding a major meeting in the national capital on Wednesday.

The meeting, scheduled at Bharat Mandapam, is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Modi, senior BJP leaders, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from all 22 NDA-ruled states and Union Territories, as well as leaders of the alliance’s constituent parties.

Sources indicate that the alliance is likely to adopt a formal resolution congratulating Prime Minister Modi on surpassing the record previously held by Jawaharlal Nehru. The event is also expected to showcase the NDA government’s achievements over the last 12 years and outline its vision for the future.

Several senior Union ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are expected to participate in the gathering alongside other key leaders of the alliance.

Apart from celebrating the milestone, the meeting is likely to focus on governance priorities, development initiatives and the NDA’s political roadmap for the coming years. Discussions are also expected to cover policy implementation, welfare programmes, economic growth strategies and preparations for future electoral contests.

With this achievement, Narendra Modi has added another chapter to his political journey, becoming the longest-serving continuously elected Prime Minister in India’s history while leading a government that has remained in office for over a decade through successive electoral mandates.
