Army Chief Launches Indigenous Xtreme Weather Diesel for High-Altitude Operations

New Delhi, July 2026 : Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth on Friday launched the indigenously developed ‘Xtreme Weather Grade’ (XWG) Diesel, a specialised fuel designed to enhance the mobility and operational readiness of military vehicles in high-altitude and extreme winter conditions.

Describing the new fuel as a significant indigenous innovation, General Seth said it would improve the mobility, safety and mission reliability of military vehicles operating under severe climatic conditions. The fuel has been jointly developed by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies as part of efforts to strengthen operational preparedness and promote self-reliance in critical defence requirements.

XWG Diesel has been developed to address the challenges posed by extremely low temperatures in high-altitude and snow-bound areas. Conventional diesel can thicken in severe cold and clog vehicle fuel filters, affecting engine performance and potentially leaving military vehicles immobilised.

According to the Army, the new fuel remains effective at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius, making it particularly suited for operations in some of India’s harshest climatic zones.

The specialised diesel complies with BS-VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications and can be used across the Indian Army’s existing vehicle fleet without requiring engine modifications or re-homologation. This compatibility is expected to facilitate its deployment without significant changes to existing military logistics and vehicle infrastructure.

General Seth said the introduction of XWG Diesel would eliminate several practices previously required to keep vehicles operational during severe winters. Besides improving vehicle availability, the fuel is expected to enhance the safety and morale of personnel deployed in remote and high-altitude locations.

The COAS congratulated the teams from the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies for developing the specialised fuel within a year. He also expressed confidence that the collaboration would encourage the development of additional specialised fuels designed to meet diverse operational requirements.

The technology has potential applications beyond the defence sector. According to officials, XWG Diesel could benefit civilian users operating vehicles and equipment in high-altitude regions and areas experiencing extreme winter conditions. Improved fuel performance in severe cold could enhance transportation reliability and safety in such locations.

The launch is being viewed as another step towards the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with indigenous technological solutions reducing dependence on specialised imports and strengthening India’s capabilities in critical operational areas.

The development comes as the Army continues to focus on enhancing logistics and mobility for troops deployed in challenging terrain and climatic conditions.

Earlier this week, General Seth concluded a two-day visit to formations under the Eastern Theatre, where he reviewed the security situation and assessed operational preparedness.

During the visit, the Army Chief was briefed on prevailing security conditions, vigilance measures and the readiness of formations deployed in the region. He also reviewed initiatives aimed at promoting peace, stability and development.

A defence spokesman said General Seth assessed the operational preparedness of the formations and reviewed ongoing measures intended to strengthen security while supporting stability across the region.

The Army Chief was also briefed on ongoing flood relief operations, including the Army’s efforts to assist affected communities and support civil authorities during the situation.

The launch of XWG Diesel, officials said, reflects the Army’s continuing focus on combining indigenous technology with operational requirements to improve readiness across diverse and demanding environments.
