India, US Deepen Strategic Engagement on Trade, Defence and Technology
Washington, April 2026 : India and the United States have intensified their strategic engagement across trade, defence and critical technologies, as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a series of high-level meetings in Washington during his three-day visit.
The discussions covered a wide spectrum of cooperation, including interactions at the Pentagon and the Department of Commerce, along with initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral trade ties. A key highlight of the visit was the launch of the India–USA Trade Facilitation Portal, unveiled by Misri along with Ambassador Vinay Kwatra.
The Indian Embassy described the portal as a significant step towards unlocking the full potential of trade between the two countries. Designed to support “Mission 500,” the platform is expected to simplify market access for exporters and enhance commercial connectivity. Registrations for exporters have already begun, with officials expressing optimism about its role in boosting bilateral trade volumes.
At the Pentagon, Misri held a “fruitful interaction” with Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Mike Duffey. The discussions focused on deepening defence industrial cooperation, strengthening supply chain linkages, and advancing technology partnerships in line with the goals outlined under the bilateral Major Defence Partnership framework.
He also met Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby for a wide-ranging exchange on regional and global developments, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia. The meeting built upon their earlier engagement in New Delhi and reflected growing strategic alignment between the two nations.
At the US Department of Commerce, Misri interacted with senior officials, including Under Secretaries Jeffrey Kessler and William Kimmitt. The talks centred on expanding cooperation in commercial sectors and critical technologies, with a strong emphasis on building resilient and trusted supply chains.
The visit underscores a coordinated push by both countries to align their economic and strategic priorities, particularly in emerging technologies and secure supply networks. These areas have become central to the evolving India–US partnership amid shifting global dynamics.
Adding to the momentum, parallel military engagement was also underway. A. P. Singh visited Peterson Space Force Base during his official trip to the United States and held discussions with Gregory M. Guillot. The Indian Air Force described the interaction as a productive exchange on complex operational issues, highlighting growing cooperation in defence and space domains.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the visit provided an opportunity to review the “full spectrum” of bilateral relations, covering trade, defence, science and technology, as well as regional and global developments of mutual interest.
This engagement follows External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Washington earlier this year and reflects a steady pace of high-level exchanges between the two countries.
India and the United States have significantly expanded cooperation under their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in recent years. With trade steadily increasing and new initiatives like the trade facilitation portal in place, both sides are looking to further strengthen economic integration while advancing collaboration in defence and advanced technologies.
