RCB Opt to Bowl First Against LSG in Crucial IPL 2026 Clash as Playoff Race Intensifies
Lucknow, May 2026 : Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the toss and elected to bowl first against hosts Lucknow Super Giants in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Thursday. The decision came at a crucial stage of the tournament, with both teams heading into the contest under contrasting circumstances in the points table.
Lucknow Super Giants, led by Rishabh Pant, are enduring a difficult phase in the season. The side has now suffered six consecutive defeats, with their most recent setback coming against Mumbai Indians, where they lost by six wickets. With just two wins from nine matches, LSG are placed at the bottom of the table with four points. Their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread, making this encounter extremely important for their survival in the tournament.
On the other hand, RCB entered the match after a four-wicket defeat against Gujarat Titans. Despite that loss, Bengaluru remain in a much stronger position, sitting second on the points table with six wins from nine matches. A victory in Lucknow would significantly boost their chances of securing a playoff berth and maintaining momentum in the final stretch of the league stage.
The rivalry between the two sides has largely been dominated by RCB in recent seasons. In their previous meeting on April 15 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, secured a comfortable five-wicket win. Overall, the Bengaluru franchise has won five of the seven encounters between the two teams, while Lucknow have managed just two victories.
With the playoff race heating up, both teams are under pressure, though for very different reasons. RCB are looking to consolidate their position in the top four, while LSG are fighting to stay mathematically alive in the competition. Tactical decisions, execution under pressure, and handling key moments are expected to play a major role in determining the outcome.
Speaking at the toss, RCB captain Rajat Patidar said his team chose to bowl first after assessing the conditions. He noted that the pitch looked good for batting but added that his bowlers would aim to restrict the opposition to a manageable total. He also mentioned that the break between matches helped the team recover and prepare well, confirming that RCB would field an unchanged playing XI.
Patidar further added that the atmosphere in Lucknow is different from their home ground but still energetic. He expressed confidence in his squad’s preparation and emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency at this stage of the tournament.
Meanwhile, LSG captain Rishabh Pant acknowledged the pressure his team is facing but stressed the need for clarity and composure. He confirmed a few changes in the lineup due to injuries, with Inglis and Mohsin Khan unavailable for selection. Pant also stated that the team had made adjustments in the batting order in an attempt to stabilize their approach.
He admitted that while stability is important, strategic changes are sometimes necessary in a long tournament like the IPL. Pant assessed the pitch as a good batting surface and expected a high-scoring contest, suggesting a par score in the range of 180–190.
