Archer’s Firepower and SKY’s Fight in Vain as Rajasthan Royals Seal Playoff Spot with 30-Run Win over Mumbai Indians
Mumbai, May 2026 : A brilliant all-round performance led by Jofra Archer powered Rajasthan Royals into the IPL 2026 playoffs as they defeated Mumbai Indians by 30 runs in a high-stakes clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Archer first delivered a crucial late-innings cameo with the bat before returning to dismantle MI’s chase with a match-winning spell of 3 for 17, ensuring Rajasthan defended 205/8 with authority.
With this victory, the Rajasthan Royals climbed to 16 points from 14 matches and secured the fourth and final playoff spot, setting up an Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in New Chandigarh on Wednesday. Mumbai Indians, despite a valiant effort from Suryakumar Yadav, fell short at 175/9, ending their campaign on a disappointing note.
Rajasthan’s late surge lifts them to 205/8
Asked to bat first, Rajasthan Royals endured a mixed outing that saw them lose momentum in the middle overs before a late flourish took them past the 200-run mark. Their innings never saw a single dominating performance, but key contributions across the lineup ensured a competitive total on a surface that slowed down as the game progressed.
After a steady but cautious start, Rajasthan lost wickets at regular intervals, slipping from a promising position of 54/3 after the powerplay. Yashasvi Jaiswal (27 off 17) looked fluent early, striking a couple of boundaries and a six, but fell trying to force the pace against Will Jacks, offering a simple catch.
Young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi struggled to settle and was dismissed cheaply for 4, while skipper Riyan Parag (14) perished at the end of the powerplay, leaving Rajasthan under pressure at 54/3.
The middle overs saw Dhruv Jurel and Dasun Shanaka attempt a recovery. Jurel anchored the innings with a well-constructed 38 off 26 balls, including three fours and two sixes, while Shanaka injected momentum with a quick 29 off 15, striking three massive sixes. However, both fell in quick succession as Mumbai clawed back into the contest.
At 119/5, Rajasthan were in danger of falling short of a competitive total, but their lower order provided the decisive push. Donovan Ferreira and Jofra Archer added quick runs, with Archer’s explosive 32 off just 15 balls becoming the turning point of the innings. His cameo featured clean hitting under pressure, lifting Rajasthan past 200.
In the final overs, Ravindra Jadeja (Impact Sub) and Nandre Burger added crucial runs, ensuring Rajasthan finished at a formidable 205/8.
For Mumbai Indians, Deepak Chahar (2/43) and Shardul Thakur (2/41) were the standout bowlers, while Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch, AM Ghazanfar, and Raghu Sharma chipped in with one wicket each.
Archer dismantles MI’s chase early
Mumbai Indians’ pursuit of 206 got off to a disastrous start, largely due to Jofra Archer’s hostile new-ball spell. The English pacer struck twice inside his first two overs, removing Rohit Sharma for a four-ball duck and then uprooting Naman Dhir’s stumps with a sharply moving delivery.
At 13/2, Mumbai were immediately under pressure, and matters worsened as Ryan Rickelton (12) and Tilak Varma (3) fell cheaply, leaving the five-time champions reeling at 38/4 inside the powerplay.
Suryakumar Yadav, the season’s most consistent performer for Mumbai Indians, attempted to rebuild the innings alongside Will Jacks. The duo added 63 runs for the fifth wicket, briefly reviving hopes with aggressive counter-attacking cricket. Jacks struck two sixes in his 33 off 18 balls before falling to a soft dismissal, caught behind after attempting an ambitious stroke.
SKY then found an ally in Hardik Pandya, who survived an early drop and capitalised on it with aggressive stroke play. Pandya struck multiple boundaries and sixes, helping Mumbai regain momentum as the pair added 48 runs for the sixth wicket.
At one stage, Mumbai appeared to be back in control, especially when they reduced the required equation to 54 runs off 24 balls. However, Archer returned at a crucial juncture to break the partnership by dismissing Pandya for 34, who miscued a pull shot to deep field.
Royals close out the game
Once Pandya departed, Mumbai’s chase collapsed rapidly. Corbin Bosch was dismissed for 2, and although Suryakumar Yadav continued his resistance, the required rate kept climbing. The pressure finally told in the 18th over when SKY attempted a big shot off Nandre Burger but was caught and bowled after mistiming the stroke.
Suryakumar’s composed 60 off 42 balls, featuring 3 fours and 4 sixes, went in vain as Mumbai lost their final recognised batter. The lower order offered little resistance as Rajasthan’s bowlers maintained tight control to close out the match comfortably.
Archer finished with outstanding figures of 3/17, while Nandre Burger (2/43), Brijesh Sharma (2/26), and Yash Raj Punj (2/44) played key supporting roles.
