TN CM Vijay Likely to Launch New Ration Card Distribution on Birthday
Chennai, June 2026 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is expected to launch the distribution of new ration cards across the state on June 22, coinciding with his birthday, in a move aimed at expanding access to welfare schemes under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
Officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department said that nearly 46,000 new ration cards have already been printed and are ready for distribution during the first phase of the programme. The initiative forms part of the government’s ongoing effort to clear pending applications and extend welfare benefits to eligible households across Tamil Nadu.
According to department sources, around 2.25 lakh applications for new ration cards have been received since January this year. Verification and scrutiny of these applications are currently underway, with eligible applicants being shortlisted for phased distribution.
A senior official said the rollout would begin shortly after the formal launch, with beneficiaries receiving the cards in stages. Authorities expect additional batches of ration cards to be issued over the coming months as the verification process for the remaining applications is completed.
Government sources indicated that Chief Minister Vijay is likely to inaugurate the programme at a special function in Perambur, his Assembly constituency, on June 22. During the event, he is expected to personally hand over ration cards to a select group of beneficiaries, symbolically marking the beginning of the statewide distribution drive.
The initiative holds particular significance as it will be Vijay’s first birthday after assuming office as Chief Minister. The occasion is expected to be marked by a series of welfare activities and public outreach programmes organised by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Party leaders and functionaries in Perambur have reportedly planned several welfare initiatives during the week leading up to June 22, as well as in the days following the celebrations. Similar events are expected to be held across districts by local TVK units, reflecting the party’s efforts to combine public service with the occasion.
Despite the political significance attached to the launch, government officials have stressed that the ration card distribution is part of a routine administrative exercise aimed at improving access to welfare benefits. Ration cards play a crucial role in enabling families to avail subsidised food grains and other essential commodities under the PDS.
With more than two lakh applications still under review, the state government is expected to continue issuing new ration cards in phases. Officials believe the exercise will help bring thousands of eligible households into the welfare network and strengthen food security across Tamil Nadu.
The upcoming launch is expected to provide relief to many families awaiting access to government welfare schemes while underscoring the administration’s focus on expanding social benefits and improving public service delivery.
