For the first time in Mahakumbh’s history, underwater drones and sonar systems will be employed for underwater surveillance

Prayagraj : The Yogi government is set to transform the Mahakumbh, scheduled for January 2025 on the sacred banks of the Triveni, with a divine and grand makeover, while placing a strong emphasis on security.

Special measures are being taken to ensure the safety of devotees, Kalpvasis, and tourists throughout the entire Kumbh Mela area, with security agencies on high alert. This year, the government is introducing several new safety initiatives for pilgrims taking the holy dip in the sacred waters of Triveni.

Kumbh Mela Officer Vijay Kiran Anand has emphasized that visitor safety remains the top priority for the administration. To address potential risks, enhanced security will be in place at the ghats and rivers, ensuring vigilance during both routine and emergencies.

For the first time, innovative underwater safety measures are being implemented. With the expansion of ghats, an 8-kilometre stretch of deep-water barricading will be constructed inside
the rivers.

Responsibility for both surface and underwater security has been entrusted to the PAC and Water Police. PAC’s Eastern Zone DIG, Rajiv Narayan Mishra, announced that underwater drones will be deployed for the first time to monitor submerged areas.

In the event of an accident, sonar technology will be used to detect underwater conditions and retrieve valuables.

A water scooter brigade will patrol the areas between the ghats and rivers, ensuring rapid response during emergencies. This brigade, equipped with 25 water scooters, will provide immediate assistance when needed.

A budget of ₹6.25 lakh has been approved for this purpose. Additionally, two floating rescue stations will be established at the Sangam and VIP Ghats, equipped with first aid and essential equipment to handle accidents. Separate boats, including Anaconda boats, will also be provided to the PAC, with the tendering process for all equipment beginning on October 1.
