PM Modi Arrives in New Zealand on Historic Visit, Receives Warm Welcome from PM Christopher Luxon

Auckland, July 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived in Auckland for a two-day visit to New Zealand, marking the final leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour. In a rare and special gesture, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally received his Indian counterpart at the airport, underscoring the growing warmth and strategic importance of bilateral ties between the two nations.

The two leaders greeted each other with a warm embrace before exchanging pleasantries, setting a positive tone for what is being described as a landmark visit. India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, Muanpuii Saiawi, senior officials, and dignitaries were also present at Auckland Airport to welcome Prime Minister Modi.

Sharing the moment on social media platform X, Prime Minister Luxon posted a video of the arrival and wrote, “Welcome to New Zealand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” highlighting the significance of the historic visit.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in New Zealand after concluding a successful three-day visit to Australia, where he held extensive discussions with Australian leaders, business executives, and members of the Indian diaspora. His visit to New Zealand is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in four decades, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold comprehensive talks with Prime Minister Luxon to review the full spectrum of India-New Zealand relations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions will focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, education, agriculture, technology, renewable energy, and people-to-people exchanges.

The leaders are also expected to deliberate on regional and global developments, reaffirming their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific while exploring new opportunities for strategic collaboration.

Apart from official engagements, Prime Minister Modi will interact with leading business leaders and prominent sports personalities, reflecting the expanding scope of cooperation between the two countries beyond traditional diplomatic ties. He is also scheduled to address a large gathering of the Indian diaspora, one of the fastest-growing and most influential communities in New Zealand.

Ahead of the visit, New Zealand’s Minister for Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, described Prime Minister Modi’s arrival as a “very significant milestone” in bilateral relations. Speaking in an interview, McClay said the visit comes at a transformative moment, just months after India and New Zealand signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to significantly boost economic cooperation.

He noted that the Indian-New Zealand community, now the country’s third-largest ethnic group, was eagerly looking forward to welcoming the Indian Prime Minister.

“This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years, and it comes shortly after the signing of our Free Trade Agreement. It is a historic occasion, and people across New Zealand, especially the Indian community, are excited to welcome Prime Minister Modi and make him feel at home,” McClay said.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit also follows Prime Minister Luxon’s successful trip to India in March 2025, during which he held extensive discussions with Prime Minister Modi and met President Droupadi Murmu. That visit provided fresh momentum to bilateral relations and laid the foundation for deeper engagement across multiple sectors.

India and New Zealand have enjoyed cordial diplomatic relations since establishing formal ties in 1952. Over the decades, both countries have strengthened cooperation through shared democratic values, membership of the Commonwealth, adherence to common law traditions, and a mutual commitment to promoting peace, prosperity, and inclusive economic growth.

With the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement and increasing collaboration in commerce, defence, education, innovation and technology, Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit is expected to elevate India-New Zealand relations to a new strategic level. The visit also reflects the growing importance both nations attach to strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region while deepening cultural and people-to-people connections.
