Glasgow, July 2026 : Fiji’s Jasmine Daunakamakama continued to make history at the Commonwealth Games 2026, becoming the first woman from her country to win a boxing medal at the Games after reaching the semifinals of the women’s 57kg category.

Daunakamakama had already created history earlier in the competition by becoming the first Fijian woman to compete in boxing at the Commonwealth Games. Her landmark campaign reached another milestone on Wednesday when she defeated Sri Lanka’s Keshani Hansika in the women’s 57kg quarterfinal, securing at least a bronze medal.

Daunakamakama described her belief as an internal struggle between fear and one’s true self, saying the strength to overcome fear comes from within. She will now look to draw on that mental strength when she faces defending champion Michaela Walsh of Northern Ireland in the semifinal on Thursday.

Regardless of the result in the last-four clash, Daunakamakama is assured of a bronze medal, making her achievement a landmark moment for Fiji and its growing boxing programme.

Uganda Make History in Women’s 3×3 Basketball

Uganda have emerged as one of the surprise stories of the Commonwealth Games after reaching the women’s 3×3 basketball final on their debut.

Uganda stunned New Zealand 21-9 in the semifinal on Wednesday, guaranteeing the African nation at least a silver medal in its first appearance in the discipline at the Commonwealth Games.

The Ugandan team will now face Australia, the 2022 bronze medallists, in the gold-medal match scheduled for 8:00 pm BST.

Jane Asinde was instrumental in Uganda’s stunning victory, scoring eight points as her team produced a commanding display. Reflecting on the historic achievement, Asinde said the team had drawn enormous motivation from supporters back home, with families and fans sending messages of encouragement throughout the tournament.

The victory has generated considerable excitement in Uganda, with the team now within touching distance of a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Scotland Secure Historic 3×3 Basketball Medal

Scotland also celebrated a landmark achievement in men’s 3×3 basketball, securing their first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the sport after defeating New Zealand 18-16 to win bronze on home soil.

American-born Scotland player Skyler White played an important role in the historic campaign, helping the hosts hold off New Zealand in a closely fought contest.

The bronze medal was particularly significant for Fraser Malcolm, who returned to the Commonwealth Games after the disappointment of finishing fourth at Birmingham 2022. Four years later, he finally secured the medal he had been chasing.

For White, representing Scotland in front of a home crowd and helping the team win a medal was an experience filled with pride.

The Scotland player’s name has also attracted attention because of its similarity to a famous character from the television series Breaking Bad. White joked about the coincidence, explaining that while he frequently receives comments about the name online, the connection is entirely accidental.

He added humorously that despite sharing the name, he was certainly not like the fictional character.

The achievements of Daunakamakama, Uganda and Scotland have added further colour to the Glasgow Games, with athletes and teams from smaller sporting nations producing breakthrough performances and creating memorable moments on the Commonwealth stage.
