Gyaneshwari Yadav Wins Silver in Women’s 53kg Weightlifting as India’s Medal Tally Grows at Commonwealth Games
Glasgow, July 2026 : India’s impressive campaign in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued on Monday as Gyaneshwari Yadav secured the silver medal in the women’s 53kg category with a personal-best performance, further strengthening the country’s medal tally in Glasgow.
The 23-year-old lifter delivered a composed and consistent display, registering a combined lift of 199kg, including 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk. Her overall total, along with her clean and jerk effort, marked a new personal best and earned her a well-deserved place on the podium.
Nigeria’s Didih Onome Omolola claimed the gold medal after producing an outstanding total of 206kg, lifting 93kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk. Omolola’s final clean and jerk attempt equalled the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games record, underlining her dominance in the event. Canada’s Rebeka Groulx completed the podium with the bronze medal after recording a total lift of 178kg.
Gyaneshwari displayed remarkable consistency throughout the competition. After successfully lifting 88kg in the snatch segment, she remained flawless in the clean and jerk, clearing 103kg, 107kg, and finally 111kg. Her composed execution under pressure ensured India another podium finish in one of its strongest sporting disciplines.
The silver medal adds to India’s growing success in weightlifting at the Glasgow Games. Gyaneshwari became the third Indian weightlifter to secure a medal, joining Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu, who won gold, and Raja Muthupandi, who claimed silver in the men’s competition. The performances reaffirm India’s status as one of the leading weightlifting nations in the Commonwealth.
Hailing from Chhattisgarh, Gyaneshwari began her weightlifting journey at a young age and steadily progressed through the state’s sports development programmes. Her consistent performances at junior and senior national championships earned her a place in the Indian national squad, where she has continued to establish herself among the country’s top female lifters.
She currently trains at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, under the national coaching programme. Over the years, she has represented India at several prestigious international competitions, including the Commonwealth Championships, Asian Weightlifting Championships, and the World Weightlifting Championships, gaining valuable experience on the global stage.
With another medal added to India’s tally, the country’s weightlifters continue to deliver impressive performances at the Commonwealth Games. Gyaneshwari’s personal-best effort not only reflects her steady rise in international weightlifting but also highlights the growing depth of India’s talent pool as the nation continues its pursuit of sporting excellence on the world stage.
