2nd T20I: Zimbabwe Opt to Bowl as India Hand Debut to Yash Thakur; Playing XIs Announced

Harare, July 2026 : Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza won the toss and elected to bowl first against India in the second T20 International at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday. With India leading the three-match series 1-0 after a convincing seven-wicket victory in the opener, the visitors will be aiming to seal the series with another win.

Raza opted to retain the same playing XI that featured in the first T20I, expressing confidence that the Harare pitch would once again offer assistance to the seamers during the early stages of the match.

Explaining his decision, the Zimbabwe skipper said the winter conditions generally make the surface lively at the start, giving fast bowlers an opportunity to make early breakthroughs. He noted that although the wicket appeared better than the one used in the opening match, it was still expected to offer enough movement to trouble the batters initially.

“The surface looks much better today and may not be as spicy as the previous game, but Harare wickets during winter usually assist the seamers early on. We hope our fast bowlers can exploit those conditions and put India under pressure,” Raza said after the toss.

India captain Shreyas Iyer revealed that the visitors had made one change to their lineup, handing a T20 International debut to fast bowler Yash Thakur, who replaced Ashok Sharma.

The 27-year-old pacer has impressed consistently in domestic cricket. Thakur was a member of the Vidarbha team that lifted the Ranji Trophy in the 2024-25 season and has represented Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League. He has also been a regular member of the India ‘A’ squad over the past year, earning his maiden senior international cap.

Iyer said India would have preferred to bat first but remained confident of adapting to the conditions.

“We were actually looking to bat first. The wicket looks much better than it did in the first match and should be good for batting. Our focus is to stay in the present, play according to the situation and execute our plans,” the India skipper said.

India will now look to continue the momentum gained from their opening victory and clinch the series, while Zimbabwe face a must-win contest to keep the series alive before the final T20I.
