India with Record-Breaking Snatch at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, July 2026: India continued its impressive campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 as weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam clinched the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category on Sunday. The Indian lifter delivered a spirited performance, setting a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch before finishing second with a combined lift of 264kg.

Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq claimed the gold medal with a Games record overall total of 273kg, while Joshua Amunga Mboya of Kenya secured the bronze with an aggregate lift of 260kg.

Rishikanta began the competition confidently in the snatch event, successfully lifting 116kg on his opening attempt. He followed it up with a smooth 119kg lift before producing his best effort of the day with 121kg on his final attempt. The successful lift not only placed him at the top of the standings after the snatch segment but also established a new Commonwealth Games record in the discipline.

Carrying that momentum into the clean and jerk, the Indian made a strong start by comfortably lifting 143kg in his opening attempt. The successful effort kept him firmly in contention for the gold medal as the competition entered its decisive phase.

Seeking to strengthen his lead, Rishikanta attempted 148kg on his second lift but failed to complete it. The missed opportunity allowed Malaysia’s Aniq to seize the initiative with a successful 149kg lift, moving ahead in the overall standings.

With the gold medal hanging in the balance, the Indian lifter opted for an ambitious 151kg in his final clean and jerk attempt. He managed to clean the weight onto his shoulders but was unable to complete the jerk despite a determined effort. The failed lift ended his challenge for the title, leaving him with a total of 264kg, enough to secure the silver medal.

Aniq, who had already established a commanding lead, rounded off his campaign in spectacular fashion by lifting 152kg in the clean and jerk. His combined total of 273kg set a new Commonwealth Games overall record, sealing the gold medal in emphatic style.

Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya finished third with 260kg, completing the podium.

Although he narrowly missed out on the gold, Rishikanta’s silver medal and record-breaking performance in the snatch provided India with another significant success at the Games. His achievement also ensured that India opened Day 4 of the competition on a positive note, adding another medal to the country’s growing tally and reinforcing its strong tradition in international weightlifting.
